Aftermarket Mags
Hi All

Just bought a 2001 Pajero SWB 3500. Love the vehicle. Its in excellent condition. Im really happy with it except for the aftermarket 16" rims fitted by the previous owner. The vehicle has General 265/70 R16 tyres almost new. I find that the steering wheel shakes from about 100Km/h to about 150km/h. I have checked the wheel alignment , balancing and the rims are not buckled at all.

After some investigation i found that the spigot diameter on my Pajero is 67.1mm and the ID of the aftermarket mags is about 110mm. Is this the cause of my problem? The vehicle has six studs which should locate the wheel correctly when fitted, but the problem persists. One solution is to make up spigot rings to take up the space between the spigot and the rim thereby ensuring the correct fit between the rim and the spigot. Has anyone made up spigot rings for their Pajero?

Or could it just be the tyres that are faulty in some way?

Thanks,

JohnDG

Re: Aftermarket Mags
You have a 99.99% chance that the spigot rings are your problem Try TWTthey might be able to save you a lot of time

Re: Aftermarket Mags
TWT made me some spigots that cured a similar problem on my 3.2 DiD.

Re: Aftermarket Mags
Hi Guys,
Just about the shaking,I understand that spigot might be a problem but did you maybe have a check if one or maybe more of the tyres is out of round? I have the same problem on D4D Bakkie and this is the origanal tyres which it came from supplier. General Grabber. I have tried in vain to get a Rep. from general to come and invesigate. So now I am just managing till time arrives to replace which will be in the next 6000km. It is not that bad when I switch them to the back but very shaky when they are in the front. Will bear for now.

Re: Aftermarket Mags
Hi Johann

My problem with vibration at various speeds on my 2001 Pajero 3500 SWB had a few contributing factors and no single cause. I made up spigot rings which did not solve the problem.

I decided to look at the tyres next and found that the Continental General Grabber 265/R16 on my Pajero had been recalled due to manufacturing defects last year.Continental have sorted out the problem and supply them as standard factory fitted equipment on the Fortuner. I eventually learned that Continental has a research and test centre in Epping(ct). They performed a thorough check on all 4 tyres and found that one Mag was buckled and one tyre was faulty. They supplied a new tyre and balancing free of charge. This helped but did not solve the problem.

My attention now turned to the propshafts as a possible cause. I noticed(using a carefully placed cellphone) that my front prop did not disengage when in 2H. I took it to Mitsu and found that the vacuum solenoid on the front diff was faulty and permanently engaged my front prop. The solenoid was replaced. My vehicle was a bit smoother but still had a vibration from 125km/h and a droning sound at about 90Km/h.

Mitsu also advised me to remove the vibration damper at the front of the rear propshaft, just behind the centre diff. This took care of the droning sound at 90Km/h.

However, I still have the vibration at about 125 Km/h. I suspect that it may be the rear propshaft or the tyres. The rear prop is carbon fibre, very expensive and cannot be balanced. Not sure why Mitsu didn't just fit a metal prop for the rear but I noticed on a 2007(Gen 4) Pajero at mitsu's workshop that they have gone back to a steel prop at the rear. Im tempted to make up a metal rear prop for the rear to replace the carbon fibre mitsu prop. I am going to Ferobrake and propshaft tomorrow to get a quote. And i did check with Mitsu, the Gen 4 metal prop will not fit on the Gen 3.

I have decided to first replace the tyres with BFG 270R16 cos the Grabbers are not good offroad anyway and then look at the rear prop if it is still a problem.

I aslo skimmed all 4 brake discs to get rid of movement in the steering wheel under braking.

I love my Paj and it is a lot smoother now but the vibration is very irritating  . In my opinion, aftermarket mags are not a good idea as they change the centre line of the wheel which makes balancing more difficult, but they do look good and other guys seem to get away with them with no problems at all.

I think its always better to keep your vehicle as standard as possible. Mitsu spend millions on research and development to get it right. I think they did a great job and IMHO there design should be left alone if you want your vehicle to last.

Good luck with your Paj. I'll keep you updated on my vibration issues.

Cheers,

John.
