Pajero Sport Launched
The Pajero Sport has finally been launched locally. The price is a rather steep R414k...

Re: Pajero Sport Launched
I'm not a new car person, but for once I am tempted.
I need to look at actual cost (after tax benefits :D )

It is amazing (or is it?) that just about all comments are based on comparisons with the Fortuner.
I think Toyota is having a worrying time!

Re: Pajero Sport Launched
I posted the launch article on the home page.

Very lekka... but some of the specs I find odd.. rear drum brakes, and only available in auto.. or are there more models on the way?

I agree, Simon.

It also seems as though the automatic would be the older generation 4-speed from the Gen 2, which is not nearly as nice a box as the Gen 3's 5-speed (but probably cheaper).

Still, the Pajero Sport might prove to be a worthy reincarnation of the Gen 2. It has the nice DiD motor (pity that it had to be the common rail version though), the older generation manually shifted Super Select box, front suspension based on that of the Gen 3 and rear suspension based on that of the Gen 2. On paper quite a nice package, but the proof will be in the eating.

I hope more models are on the way. It would be great to have manuals and petrols too.

Re: Pajero Sport Launched
I'm unfamiliar with the auto box.

Does that 4-speed have an overdrive with lock-up ( effectively making it a 5-speed ) ?
Re: Pajero Sport Launched
If it is indeed the 4-speed auto from the later Gen 2 (I think the transmission model code is V4AW3-7), then it is not a five speed (four plus overdrive) box but a four speed (three plus overdrive). It is electronically controlled and does have torque converter lock-up functionality. Selection of the overdrive fourth gear can be prevented by depressing a switch on the gear lever.

The gear ratios in the Gen 2 with 4M40 motor were:
1st: 2.804
2nd: 1.531
3rd: 1
4th: 0.705
Reverse: 2.393

and in the Gen2 with 24 Valve 3.0 V6 and 3.5 V6 they were:
1st: 2.804
2nd: 1.531
3rd: 1
4th: 0.754
Reverse: 2.393

The nose looks a bit like the Triton styling :| on the first photo which is not my fav, the back looks better though. Will be nice to see how it fairs offroad. Drum brakes are outdated, can you have ABS on drum brakes?

Re: Pajero Sport Launched
That is intresting as I had a 2005 colt rodeo and it never had very good braking/ stopping system. The front disks had to be skimmed at 50,000km and i really had to push the pedal hard to stop at a decent distance. Even my wife moaned about it. Was a great 4x4 anyhow. My 18 year old pajero has all round disks and its braking is a lot better than my colt. :D and its def not ABS
