Hi,
I've got a nice puzzle that I need help/advice on! I've got an April 2007 Gen 4 DiD GLX with 123K on the clock - bought it 2nd hand with 95K on the clock 18 months ago.
Yesterday I took a mate to test drive a December 2005 Gen 3 3.8GLS with 77K on the clock - he was looking at a Patrol so I thought I'd give him a taste of Pajero. Problem now, is I find myself thinking of that damn V6 with 45K less on the clock (I suspect this is when Roelf starts grinning).
My biggest concern with my DiD is that I don't know how she was treated for her first 95K so am always thinking of potential trouble with Turbo/Heads etc. I pick up on the forum that the 3.8's are fairly bullet proof but obviously thirstier.
If I swap the 2 vehicles I could "liberate" 25/30K cash which I can put in my maintenance reserve, and assuming I could average 16l/100km in the petrol (stolen from Roelf's post) versus the 11l/100km that I average on my DiD, my increased fuel cost would be approx offset by the savings in service costs (15000km vs 10000km).
Should I then have more peace of mind (mechanically speaking) in a 3.8V6 that is 14 months older but with 45K km less? (And did I mention the sound of that V6??? )
What issues, if any, in swapping a Gen4 for a Gen3 - newer technology etc??
Any opinions welcome - I've got myself scratching where I didn't even have an itch.............
Cheers
Tom
Tom,
Check this thread: TOP GUNS. Seven of the first 10 cars are Diesels. The DID is a great engine, and the 45k extra km is negligible. Personally, I would keep the Gen 4 DID.
The petrol engine is great, and gives excellent performance. I would not push a diesel like I push my petrol, but without too much strain, Ralf got his diesel up the dunes at atlantis:
The dunes is the one place where the petrols tend to out-perform the diesels, due to the need for high revs.
At the end of the day, it is about how you intend to use the vehicle. On 4x4 challenges, I'd prefer the petrol, and on towing and overland cruising and "normal" 4x4 tracks, I'd prefer the diesel.
Hope this helps!

Thanks guys - spoke to the stealer today and final offer is:
Give me 220K for my DiD
They'll put new tyres on 3.8V6 and it will cost me 203K all in.
Is it possible to get my DiD checked by a trustworthy place that can allay my fears that the vehicle was abused i.e. is it possible to detect problems before they occur? If so then I'm happy to keep her (even though I can still can hear (and feel) that V6
)
Please excuse my mechanical ignorance!
Cheers

you will get used to the V6 but not the fuel price!
TomPaj,
Nobody can promise you that the one will or won't give trouble.
My opinion is that if the DiD has been performing spotlessly for the last 18 months, then you can relax. If it needed a drop of water or oil, or needed a tune here or there, then you can wonder about the future of that diesel.
Remember at this point you know much more about the diesel that the petrol. You did 30k in 18 months. That means another 3 years to get to 200k. There is NO reason why the diesel shouldn't run to 200k without any trouble.
I'm not too sure about the appointments of the 2007 GLX, and like 4EPajero said... the GLS is a little better appointed, but I don't know by how much. AND diesel is now 45c/l more expensive than petrol.
There is no particular reason to NOT chose either of the two. Listen to your heart and go with the flow.
Good luck
Roelf

Thanks again for the input - I'm going to have a longer test drive of the 3.8 tomorrow and, as Roelf says, I'll listen to my heart
It's more about mechanical peace of mind (perceived) vs estimated increase in fuel costs.
I see the Gen3 3.8 puts out "only" 150Kw vs the 180 odd of the Gen4 3.8 - does this make it use more fuel as it needs a harder right foot to move 2.2 tonnes?
Thanks again for the input.
Cheers

The appointments in the Gen3 GLS are quite a bit more luxurious than the early 2007 Gen4 GLX - leather (warmed) seats, sunroof, CD shuttle (I think), and the thing I miss the most, cruise control - there may be other stuff but for me only the cruise control is really useful and that I can easily add to the GLX.RoelfleRoux wrote: I'm not too sure about the appointments of the 2007 GLX, and like 4EPajero said... the GLS is a little better appointed, but I don't know by how much. This is a choice you have to make.
Personally I would keep the 2007 3.2 DiDc GLX. My 2001 Did now stands at 240 000km and sometimes I wonder how I am ever gonna replace it if it never breaks.

OK - decision made - keeping the GLX!
CATS - the clincher was the fact that I would lose too much "vehicle equity" which as you point out makes much harder to get another Paj - the new price of these babies is eye watering.
I took the Gen3 for a good drive from Rivonia Rd, down South Rd, on the highway at Marlborough around to Rivonia Rd, and back again - averaged 13l/100 driving the same style as my DiD - probably 30% worse than the DiD which is acceptable. It drives like a dream, FSH, only 73K on the clock - would be a nice buy for anyone trading "up" from a platkar.
Again thanks everyone for the input.
