Inclinometer fluid
Hi All
This is my first post to get some advise.
I have a 2000 GLS 3000 V6 Petrol. I've had it for 5years with no problems and am very happy with it. Its got just over 190000 kms on the clock. It gets its regular service at a reliable garage but the emphasis is more on oil and filter changes rather than the more serious stuff like wheel bearings etc. At the 100000 km service all that needs replacing gets replaced. Is there anything that I should look out for in particular with these Kms on the clock before they break (normally on holiday in the middle of nowhere)as foresight is better than hindsight.\
My inclinometer fluid seems to have picked up a leek, or something, as a bubble has developed in the gauge. Has anyboby else experienced a similar problem and manage to sort it out and how? Any assistance or advice will be appreciated.

the back tranparent casing gets very brittle over time and with the movement of expansion and contraction over many years, cracks and leaks. I broke mine out completely and used a tougher plastic, sealed with q-bond.

Drilled a small hole on top and filled with oil - seal the top hole with a dab of silicone.

One year later and still good.

Get it done asap.

Mine also developed a leak, and I left it cos I didn't have the inclination ('scuse the pun) to get it sorted. I then went on the west coast trail and now the thing is damaged because there was no fluid cushioning the device.

So now I not only have a useless little gadget it my dash, but a non-functioning useless little gadget.

If you can still look at the "Om-donner-meter" in stead of watching the trail, it is not steep at all! :o

Otherwise put: If it is steep enough to fall over, you won't be looking at the meter to confirm it. :lol:

Replace it with a more valuable gauge, eg
  • oil pressure
  • coolant temp
  • voltage
  • vacuum / boost
(depending on what you already have)

You are right. I probably will never use the thing as I think I will know when to bail out before donnering over. It was more out of curiosity than functionality that I slipped in the query. Thanks for the feedback. If I do replace it with some other after market gauge are there any recommendations on brand that wont make the whole gauge layout look k-k.

Hi Guys

I have read a couple of posts about refilling with mineral oil. Problem is that no one that i have phoned knows what it is or where I can get it.

I have contacted a few pharmacies and hardware stores around Bellville & Durbanville, they don't have a clue.

My "almost" FIL filled his with glycerine and stuffed it up.

Can anyone help?

Johnsons Baby oil :twisted: been working for about a year now without problems. Covered the whole back expansion goodie with a 3mm layer of pratley wonda fix. when this lot cured I pried out the little plug at the top and filled the unit with the baby oil using a syringe as funnel. Clean any oil spilt and epoxy the plug back in and put a dollop of epoxy over the plug
