DIY work done today
As discussed before I decided to take on the removal of the heads myself.
Not being a mechanic progress is slow but I am at least progressing.
So far for today I have removed the manifold , the radiator, the fan, the pulleys backplate with the aircon pump connected to a bracket which must be romoved first before removing the aluminium backplate, removed cam belt covers , the throttle body for cleaning.
It sounds like little being done but there is a boat full of nuts to remove and it all works in sequence as one part can not be removed before some bracket or pipe or wire has to be removed first, especially the aircom pump and bracket as well as the pulley backplate.
Made sure every bolt is packed in plastic bags marked for the specific plate or bracket.
Next is the fuel rails cam belt and then heads.
Radiator will be sent away for checks and repair as well as the heads and the manifold with that irritating air sucking at butterfly valve.
I am finishing the rear wheel bearings this week as soon as Mitsu can get all the spares to me. Sideshafts at engineering to remove old bearings and install new ones.

Good luck.

Man you have balls to tackle a job like that!

At best I will be someones "handlanger" on my own car! Too afraid that I land up with a bown unused spares when the job is "completed"!

A bit of a tip, take pictures as you go along by the time you reassemble your memory might be faded and a pic can jog it all back

Re: DIY work done today
Thanks for your comments    and good luck wishes I think I might need that.
The only advice I have is to make sure that all bolts and nuts are carefully marked and packed in seperate containers . My SWAMBO bought these nice plastic bags with locks (bank bag type) but just a bit bigger, I have taken note of the decriptions of items and sommer made up my descriptions for it. I have a problem with the general mechanics in my town and there is plenty of them with regards to quality work and then the GREED
Armed with a torque wrench and air tool I can get every bolt and nut removed and fitted and hopefully not have any spares left   Will keep you posted.

DIY work done today
Well I am Back Again,
The heads are finally removed. Yip and what a challenge it proved to be. No wonder the guys are charging these high fees to do a job like this.
I also saw a crack in the left exhaust manifold and is now looking for one to replace don't know what Mitsu will charge
Otherwise the sleeves look good with no ridges or marks on piston reach side and as well further down the sleeves.
I have also decided to replace the spark plug wires as it is a mission to replace once heads is on again.
I will not replace the coils though .

Chris,

I had both mine welded some 3000 km ago, and they are still OK. Few welders are able to weld cast iron, but it can be done.

Mine was done by Powerflo exhausts in Bellville.

Otherwise you may want to use the opportunity to have branches made up. Nino62 did this - that is why he has/had a spare set of manifolds.

I was advised against branches, but I do see positive feedback on them.

Powerflo suggested that I should not refit the heat sinks against the manifolds, as that reflexts heat back on the manifolds, causing "overheating" thereof in extreme heat conditions. Apparently heat sinks only helps in sub-zero conditions...

Good luck with your project!

Re: DIY work done today
Mcnoogle and tonton,
Thanks for the reply here. I have a very bad experience with Part Hunt as they are very expensive close to OE prices but thanks.
Yip Anton I think welding will do. That was my first thought but I was scared about the welder but I will maar look around here I might find a decent one.
I thought the heat shields were to protect the manifolds from sudden water splashes and therefore protected it from cracking.
I will take your advice and not install them again.
For forum users in our area I spoke to Mitspro today on costing of refurbishing the heads and according to them it should not be more than R4000,00 maybe less, including sandblasting, grinding, skimming, reseat of valves, new lifters and seals.
So I will take it them in the week should the oppertunity arise.
To repair manifold butterfly valve is R400,00 with machining and new seal kit.
A new waterpump at Alert Parts was quoted at R750,00 excl vat and according to them it is a pump made in the UK and good quality. Will take the old one to match .
A head gasket set was R550,00 excl. I think I will only need the two head gskets as all other gaskets has been replaced already and Mitspro will do the rest on heads.
Anton the transfer will be done today check your account and then we will talk further.

Re: DIY work done today
Chris,

Wow, those are good prices! I thought the w/pump will be 3G!

Once your Pajero's heads are done, you will be amazed by the car you have! And it will look mean with the newly purchased bullbar!

I also thought the heat sinks was protecting the manifolds, but the guy at Powerflo assured me that they are the cause of manifold cracks. I am no fundi on this, so I took his advice. I still have them stashed away in the garage...

Please post some pics of your progress.

Regards,
Anton

Re: DIY work done today
I found out today that the water pump at Alert Parts was not the GMB pump as they promissed but a very cheap CHINA version so I ordered on from my local Midas at R 1350,00 and apparently made in America and that they have also decided not to buy from Alert as the quality is not up to scrath. Thanks for Honesty from Midas in this regard.
Total price quoted from two different guys for head refurbishment ranges from R4600,00 to R3800,00 at Mitspro all work done. I am sure not Mitsu lifters though but I will settle for the nearest best product at this stage.
My cashflow has taken a huge dent and will wait till next month to do heads.
I have recieved all other spares today but man  that price for sparkplug wires at Mitsu R750,, excl vat stomped me. I could not find pirate wires anywhere.
