Drivetrain warning light
Hi guys,

I need some advice from the Pajero grey-beards. My 2003 v6 is showing a worrying sign. The rectangular light in the centre of the drivetrain indication on the instrument panel starts to flash after about 30-40 minutes of driving in normal 2wd setting. When I stop, turn the ignition off and then on again the warning disappears for approximately 30-40 minutes of driving then reappears.

My local Mitsubishi dealership's mechanic said it could be a vacuum hose that has persished but he will nave to do a full check when the vehicle is serviced. He is not overly concerned since he says that major drivetrain failures are very uncommon in these vehicles.

I tested all the drivetrain settings one by one on a gravel road and they all seem to be working fine. Low range and 4wd modes are easy to verify, but I can't say whether the diff-locks are engaging. I based my diagnosis on the fact that the lights show that they are engaged after switching and I can hear the switching taking place.

If anyone has an idea what the cause could be, please let me know.

Thanks

Identical symptoms on a mate's 2003 LWB DiD GLS turned out to be the vacuum pump. Mistu first replaced all the switches (R1 800.00), but in the end it was the pump - which they repaired for free (felt guilty about replacing the switches). I'm not sure if the V6 has a pump or gets the vacuum from the manifold. Either way, your problem could be vacuum related. Give the little vacuum lines a good look for a loose connection or some perished spots.
