Videos

The videos fail to show the slippery conditions and the steep slope of the hill. You can see the soft conditions of the ground if you look at the end of the 1st video how the pajero's left front tyre digs in - it didn't spin in.

Re: 4ePikanini's new Gen3
I volunteered to help for the hobbit run this past weekend

http://mountainrunner.co.za/hobbit-trai ... obbit-100/

and good thing I did. Towards Cata hut the hilux that was part of the team couldn't get up the forest track with it's trailer.

Not because of it's 2x4 driveline but because it just didn't have enough power (2.5 D4D).

So we swapped trailers (mine was a little venter and his was a big 4x4 type trailer loaded with equipment water etc) and the pajero towed it out without breaking a sweat causing a bit of talk that I thought better to stay out of.

Last night it was put to good use as well where a group of 6 got lost on the trail close to dark and in true thick mist. Based on their responses over the phone and compass readings we managed to figure out where they were. We looked up the GPS coordinates and off I went following little forest tracks to pick them up.

All 6 of them plus their running packs and Shalene (SWAMBO) fit right in and back to the finish without a boo or haa. One of them even complimented the car (coming from a runner who has no mind for cars)

All in all a very enjoyable weekend.

EIsh!
Good call. You never know what is going on below the surface - especially in flooding waters.

Re: 4ePikanini's new Gen3
I have been struggling with a smoking idle for quite some time and have exhausted a few options including valve stem seals, dirty filters etc.

Today I decided I would have a look at the pump timing.

Mitsu East Londond refused to do the check with the MUT-II tool performing actuator test 43 and checking the pump squirt timing so I decided I'll do it by feel.

I disconnected the battery tray, diesel pump covers and electrical connections to gain access.

I had to fabricate a custom 14 spanner to get to the nut at the back of the pump (a real PITA)

I tilted the pump away from the engine (and then assembled enough to start) and it smoked more.

Disassembled again and tilted towards (don't know if that's advancing or retarding) the engine (marked the pump housing and tilted it about 1.5mm from that mark)

assembled and she wasn't smoking anymore. Woop Woop. Now to see what happens when the ecu settles from the disconnected battery and whether my fuel consumption will drop (as I think it was a bit high at 13.5-14l/100km)

Contrary to popular belief the pump can be advanced or retarded even though it's an electronic injection pump (NOT common rail - common rail will need purely electrical adjustment if I'm not mistaken)

The mitsu procedure is outlined in the 4M41 11C manual on pages 11C-9, 11C-10 & 11C-11.

I believe this slight compensation can nullify the tiny wear in the pump if the history of the fuel through the pump may be suspect (although I believe more and more my engine has been worked on before and the pump was never set up properly - my CAT hid the smoke until I removed it a while ago)
