calling it a day
working systematically I got this far. I thought I'd take some photos of the various stages of removal as I couldn't find any on the web
The picture show up mimiature flaws but to the naked eye in normal light the camlobes and journals are as smooth as glass.
No discernible play in the rocker rollers either.

Hi Marius,
Try some pennatrating oil ( Q20 or even better WD40). Turn clock wise and then anti-clock wise wile trying to pull them out.

I'm not going to pull the injectors now. I can get them to turn slightly but they don't want to come out.
I have to skip that step now as I need the car Friday with time to spare for unexpected drama - I'm not too worried about the injectors as I've almost done 20'000km since I bought the car with no real hassle. The idle is also smooth.

I'm going to have them checked out when I get back.
In the meantime I'll have to conjure up an idea today to compress the valve springs. A ring flat spanner and some leverage might work in my mind.

Best of luck. With a man making plans on the farm every day, the special tool for the lifters should not be a problem.
I still think it is worth your the trouble to try some WD40 soak in while doing the seals. It is a peace of cake to remove and fit the injectors once you've got them out.
Let us know if the stem seals were hard and did the smoke stop.
Sterkte !

I have worked out a system and have just finished one completely.

If you didn't have to wash your hands to
Make sure the little cotters seat properly! Many a engine has been lost due to a cotter coming loose at first start-up.
PS Take out those injectors! (use the same leverage system you use to compress the valve springs)
- take photographs
- type a post on the forum

You have just proofed it again ---- You don't always need fancy/ expensive tools to do a good job.
Baie oulik, eenvoudig en tog het jy niks meer nodig nie.
