Tyre profile problem
Help!!! I have a 2005 lwb 3.2 auto pajero and was told that i cannot put on a higher profile tyre (from 265/65/17 too 265/70/17) due to the converter being in locked all the time if i do. Can someone please explain to me what that actually means please? :?: :?

Hi mow1,

Give us some more detail. I don't understand what you guys are talking about.

If it is something to do with the torque convrter I am even more confused.

Re: Tyre profile problem
Going from a 60 profile to 65 profile will have a minimal influence on the diameter of the tyre. The actual difference will depend on the brand of tyre.

Changing profile will change the overall gearing, which may influence the torque converter and/or the transmission ECU.

Re: Tyre profile problem
If you have the same size all round, as far as I know it wont make a difference. Possibly your turning circle will be affected!!
Re: Tyre profile problem
Increasing the diameter of the wheel/tire will reduce torque at the wheels - so you might notice a slight decrease in acceleration.

On an auto, the point at which your Torque Converter locks up (in 4th and 5th gear) will also be at a higher speed (the speedo will show the same speed, but the true speed will be higher).

So, for example, my Pajero is normally locked up in 5th at around 120 km/h (true speed), but now with one size bigger tires, it locks up at around 125km/h.

I think the difference between 265/65/17 and 265/70/17 is about 3.4%

Re: Tyre profile problem
Thanks guys. I was lead to believe that it would damage the transmission eventually but it seems it was a scare tactic. At least I know it is possible. Losing a bit of torque isn't the problem with a Pajero, I find towing an xcape caravan pretty effortless. Thanks again for all the feed back. Cheers and happy motoring.
