Rope is stuck in the cylinder. Can't turn the engine by hand - too much rope.

I tugged too hard to try and free it, and in doing so broke a piece off. I checked the cylinder play and it sucked the last bit in that was sticking out.

Any ideas or should I take the head off?

If you DON"T take the head off, you MIGHT solve the problem.
If you DO take the head off, you WILL solve the problem.

Can you reach the rope at all?
If so, drench the cylinder with Q20 or similar 'ghost-pee', to reduce friction.

I think if you take the chain tensioner off, you can rotate the engine in the 'wrong' direction.

Give yourself a specific time before you take the head off.

Shout if I can go and buy a gasket and bring it over.

I was seeing red and couldn't think straight. I tried to calm myself by resolving that the head has to come off so just get on with it.

Luckily dad phoned and gave me an idea to rather "sukkel" with the injectors as their holes are bigger than the glow plug holes to fish for the rope.

tried it and it worked. I can't get all of it out but the engine now turns free by hand.

I'm elated.

My hart missed a few beats. It never happened to me in the past (perhaps I was just lucky!).

It may be that the rope I used was relatively thick. (10 mm Ski-rope is not that easey to break).

I was already planning a flight to East London, but your dad saved me the money.

It sounds like the injectors are out.

PS. Everybody that is planning to try this method of replacing valve stem seals,

I should have stressed it more in the description of how to do it: Do not put to much presure on the rope with the piston.

If it does happen, take out the timing chain tensioner, keep a bit of tension on the chain, to make sure it does not jump on the sprocket, turn the engine just enough to release the stuck rope, reset the tensioner (I can send details if needed) and put the tensioner back.

Nearly had trouble

If this does not fix the smoking bit behind your back have a look at your turbo seals, had a problem with one of mine on a petrol engine and it had exactly the same symptoms and the more I think about it

If it turns out to br the turbo remove and take it to turbo exchange, they will replace it with a unit that is propperly balanced, avoid the temptation of doing it yourself.

are the valve clearances measured between valve spring cap and rocker

or


between rocker roller and camshaft?

The norm is valve stem and rocker. (Theoretically the gaps are equal, though)

The only info I could find is:

• Engine cold
• Inlet 0.1mm
• Outlet 0.15mm
• Lock Nut torque 9.5 +- 0.5 Nm

I have done them between rocker roller and camshaft.

Between the spring cap and rocker just isn't practical as you will barely get a feeler gauge in there. Not to mention feeling for drag.

I tried to start her but battery was drained from using starter to move cams. On charge now.

She did swing over and sounded pretty normal so no valve to piston contact and the little piece of rope that stayed behind wasn't a problem and will burn away very quickly.
