'94 3.0V6 I started getting 3rd and 4th gear slipping out of gear while driving. Now I hear grinding noises when decelerating in lower gears intermittently. OK I know something is wrong, question is do I park the vehicle and drop the gearbox and transfer case to inspect and fix now or replace gearbox with secondhand one later because i kept on driving and screwed it beyond repair? Anyone else had this problem before? I see a lot of grinding in diffs threads but not so much gearbox. Any suggestions as I am not too clued up on the workings of the gearbox/transfercase
.

Sakkie Hattingh (Hattingh Motors in Centurion) used to have a counter-question when somebody asked him how much a repair would cost.
He simply asked:
"Did you stop the car, or did the car stop itself?"
He believed that on average the cost difference was 10x
4E's Hypothesis:

4E's Hypothesis:
- Never drive until it "stops itself"
- Grinding noises don't go away
- Grinding noises get worse
- The car will stop itself
- at the most inopportune time (at night)
- far from home
- in the rain
Yes I reckon that's valid points and a good question. Dropped the boxes once before to replace clutch and it wasn't fun
Ever opened one of these before?

A manual gearbox is pretty simple to work on EXCEPT for the exact spacers and stuff that has to be measured with a micrometer etc. - It's not something I would happily attempt.Cobvs wrote:Yes I reckon that's valid points and a good question. As far as Autoboxes are concerned, I would never dare. I have tried o educate myself but just don't seem to grasp it full enough to attempt opening myself.
Mine is a manual. I would mostly like to know what is wrong and need to be replaced. Don't want to get taken for a ride because I don't know.
Cobvs,
If you (like me) do not know what is going on in a gearbox, I suggest you get yourself a credible, competent and reasonable mechanic (look here for recommendations: Pajero Workshop Recommendations) and ask them to take charge of the job - they can take the box out, oversee that the work done is necessary, and put it back, otherwise they can at least help assessing whether the gearbox man talks sense...

Thanx Anton. I have dropped a similar box out of my Colt bakkie before. Bit of a mission but do-able. I replaced the oil seals and clutch on that occasion but did not open it at all. I drove my Pajero again for a short distance yesterday and it starts grinding when decellerating at speed and compression. Its almost like it's trying to engage the transfer case and then releasing at some point whereafter grinding noise stops. Noise is definately from gearbox though and not wheels, might be front diff as well.
Swambo some time ago drove and complained engine is revving high but no power. Took kids to school and back. When I investigated found short stick halfway pushed forward. Not totally engaged and gears were sort of in limbo not getting full power to the wheels. I am wondering if this is not what caused the current problem. Might have damaged linking gear in transfer case or gearbox. Noise seems to emanate from in front of gear lever so I reckon gearbox.
I am still gathering courage to get down to dropping the box I suppose and scared what I
might find.

I have finally started with the task and managed to get gearbox down last night
. Next task is to clean and then see what I can open or not

I am not sure if this info apply to my Pajero's gearbox - 3.0 V6 5sp (V5MT1). I have found a transmission manaul for V5M21.
I 'm itching to start splitting the gearbox and transfercase and removed gear assembly from outer covers.
Found pieces of a thin gear in the transfercase and some metal shards on the drain plug of gearbox.

Do you have a different manaul or can you advise on how to split the box. Wanna take it in for a quote.

I have never worked on a gearbox and probably never will. The skill and preciseness involved is too daunting for the novice IMHO.
I would do what you do.
Take it out, send it in and put it back yourself. That saves lots of money but I wouldn't start to think about opening any gearbox.
