Hi guys
I need some advise from you who know more than I do about Paj 4x4's. I have a 2000 blister 3.0 GLS short wheel base and am considering replacing it with a newer gen 3 Paj 3.5 or 3.8 SWB. Although I am happy with the blister and believe it will still give me a couple of good years and kms service I was just contemplating the move so before I go into any transaction to replace I thought about getting some answers to the following:
1. Is there a major and desirable power output - I intend doing an extended trip into Africa that could last up to 12 months in the next couple of years;
2. Would there be a major increase in fuel consumption to warrant an upgrade - at present I get roughly 14 liters per 100k's;
3. I have custom built a type of storage/packing system that suits our needs(in fact two - 1 for when rear seats are removed and the other for when they are folded down and used for short jaunts). Are the inside dimensions similar to one another to be able to transfer them across?. My system does make use of the sliding windows to access loose items such as cooler bags, blow up mattresses, sleeping bags and the like. Would I need to make alternative arrangements to accommodate these?. (one day I will post some pics when I have figured out how to do it )
4. Anything else I should know or take into consideration.
Any advise will be most appreciated

That consumption is pretty good.
You can fix a lot for the price of a trade in.
The engines in the gen3 are similar in power output of the gen2.
I'd keep it IMHO.

Littleman,
NOPE, nothing is the same between the two models - except maybe the fuel consumption
The 3.0V6 puts out 110kw and the Gen 3 about 40kw more. The 3.8V6MIVEC weighs in at 184kw.
Dimensions are also not the same, and the rear windows fold open about 30mm - nothing goes in or out through them.
If your blister is still in good nic, why not keep it? Better the devil you know!

The blister is a tough little devil and you still have the ladder suspension

Thanks for the responses received. I am happy with my blister and it is in good nick. I just thought that a more powerful engine will give me better fuel consumption and in the long run last longer. I am happy with the grunt in the lower gears but it does run out of steam in 5th especially going up hill. I was considering putting in one of those aftermarket chips that are supposed to give better fuel consumption and increase in power. Has anybody fitted one and what has been the benefit, if any? Has anybody also experienced better fuel consumption fully loaded than when empty. I get between 420 - 450 kms when empty and regularly over 500 kms when loaded.
I typed an earlier reply but saved it instead of posting it on the forum and dont know how to retrieve it so I have had to retype it (This time in a hurry) so I may have left something out.
I want to also fit OME suspension up front and air helper springs at the rear. Has anybody done this and if yes is it worthwhile?
All contributions to the above queries will be appreciated.

14l/100km is fantastic for the 3.0 V6. I used to get at best 16.6l/100km in my gen2 3.0 v6.
I wouldn't scratch where it doesn't itch.
My gen3 3.2 Di-D gets between 11.5 and 14l/100km anyway. The petrol may even be worse.
Have a look at fuelly for some fuel consumption comparisons.

NB: You can buy a lot of fuel for the price difference between gen2 and gen3. I love my gen3 but even for me it would have been financially viable to keep my gen2. Either way you can't go wrong as you are buying a pajero!!!!

Hi Henk
Just managed to get back on the forum from work. Excuse my ignorance but what is a ladder suspension and how does it compare with a Gen 3's suspension. Is it better or just old technology that works well. I would have thought that in later models the technology would improve making the ladder suspension obsolete.
Regarding the fuel consumption I will give some details of kilos traveled and fuel used on my last 2 trips - last year to Namibia and this year to KZN. I travel at a cruising speed of 120 Kph on the open road.

I'm sure Henk is talking about the ladder frame the Pajeros have, up to and including the gen 2.5. The newer Pajeros are of a unibody design. The older Pajeros also have a solid axle in back while I believe the newer Pajeros have independent suspension on all four wheels.
The case could be made that the older design is more off road biased while the newer design is more road biased. This view could also be too conservative.
Personally I like my gen 2.5 a lot but I guess I'm just an old fashioned guy. I like the flexibility it gives me with lifts and such. I'd keep the gen 2.5 and put the money towards improvements.

Did the Blister come out in a 3.0L? I thought it was only in 3.5V6.littleman wrote:Hi guys

Thanks arnijr for that explanation. My blister is a 3.0ltr
