newer vehicles have electronic timing advancement. Knock sensors pick up "pinging" and then the ecu knows when to retard the timing. When it work it gives great performance and great economy but if it's not working you can have bad performance and economy if it retards too much but if it advances too much you get excessive pinging that can destroy an engine pretty quickly.
