Hi all,
I heard a theory that due to low quality diesel in SA, the catalytic converter gets clogged up by about 100 000Km's causing increased back pressure on the turbo. The advice is that at this stage it should be cut out and replaced with a straight pipe resulting in less back pressure on the turbo and slightly better performance.
Has anyone got comments on this point of view please?
Thanks,
Tim
Hi Tim,
I took out my CAT a while ago and it slightly improved the consumption but also the driveability - it feels a bit stronger going up hills. I also replaced the exhaust boxes with free-flow ones to make it breath even better. It also allows the heat to escape faster from the engine.

I took out my CAT at just over 280'000km due to similar belief.
My CAT was completely clear with no signs of clogging. (I don't know if my running of 2-stroke oil for 10'000km before that played a part or not
)
I didn't notice any improvement in consumption or performance but idle seems a bit louder and the gasses are a bit more choking if you stand behind the car.
Petrol engines are known for clogging CATs but based on my finding I would say it's not necessary but peace of mind in a diesel - especially if runniong 2 stroke oil.

The sound is negligible at idle and only noticeable if you stand behind the vehicle. Normal driving sounds the same.kmroloff wrote:Regarding the noise after taking out the CAT...
Does it sound like a truck now?
and, after putting in a free flow - how does that now sound?
I haven't got a freeflow though. Still the large boxes. Just the cat has been replaced with a pipe.
Agree. I can't hear or feel a difference yet. Will see how it goes on a long trip4ePikanini wrote:
