Gen 2.5 DiD Transplant
I'm just thinking aloud for a mate of mine and was wondering how feasible it would be to transplant a 3.2 DiD into a 2.8 auto.

Nothing wrong with the vehicle. Just not happy with its towing ability and has done 280000km, and not keen on trading up to a Gen3

What would be required?
Pitfalls?
Cost?

Re: Gen 2.5 DiD Transplant
Mechanically it is quite easy - the 4m40 (2.8) and 4m41 (3.2) engine blocks are just about identical.
Most perepherals merely bolt on.

The work (and cost) will be in the electrics/electronics.

What is the 2.8 worth? Say R85k.
The engine conversion will cost ±R75k

For R160k he can buy a very nice Gen3 Di-D.

I didn't realise the transplant would be so costly... what would the cost be of the hardware?

It's not as easy as just saying add the cost of his Gen2.5 and the cost of the transplant. There is about 70k of conversions on his vehicle which can't be carried over to a Gen3, so you'd be looking at a cost of closer to 230k

A Di-D engine in good condition, with all the peripherals and wiring looms will set you back ±R45k.
The price is so high because
  • Di-D engines are very scarce
  • Di-D engines are in high demand
Places like Engine Den etc (who import front cuts from Japan) seldom have Di-D engines available.

He can ask CRD on the East Rand (me finks they are in Boksburg), for a quote.

Once the 'perceived' value of the vehicle is considerably higher than the market value (as was the case with my Gen1 and your mate's Gen2), it becomes more attractive to replace the engine.

I have read somewhere that you can , with minor adjusments, use the mechanical dieselpump as found on the 2.8 on the 3.2 which makes the transplant cost a lot more effective. No figures were quoted if I remember correctly. Is this viable or not?

Provided the pumps gear ratio is the same it shouldn't be a problem as far as I can see (that is with the non common rail engine) except for the pump might not give enough pressure to match the injector pressure of the 4m41 injectors.

But that defeats the object as the electronically controlled pump helps a lot with consumption and injector pressure.
