Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Hi Jotto.

Just a question, why did you change your wheelbearings? Were they noisy?

I have a funny noise from the rear of my Paj, sounds like tyre noise (like a slight "woong woong woong" noise that gets faster as i speed up - no vibration however) but have had it back at the tyre place twice to have balance and 4 wheel alignment checked, and they say all is perfect.
I have general grabbers (am saving up for better tyres), rear ones are 100% (1000km on them) and front ones are 85% according to my vernier... They also checked my rear bearings and said they look and feel fine.

Have just rotated my tyres front to rear and noise still persists at the rear.

Also tyres are not wearing off in flat spots of unevenly on the shoulder :? :? :?

Not keen to shell out R 750.00 ex VAT per side for timken bearings (At masterparts) if they are not at fault.

SUPER confused!

Thanks Nick

Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Hi Nick

I replaced all the bearings because one failed catastoriphically, which left me in a ditch on a Sunday in Soekfontein. I did not want to worry about another situatioin like that so replaced all of them.

Depending on the model however, it is not as simple as a couple of loose bearings at R750 plus each, as my model and up has a complete bearing/hub assembly as per the images in my post. Those come in at about R2500 each, depending on if front or rear, as the prices do differ.

Now, down to your question, the sound is not necesseraly the bearing and could be the diff or even the back CVs, but without hearing it or having more to go on, it is near impossible to say. I tend to agree that it is not the tyres, which always gets blamed first.

The bearing noise is not necesseraly a constant whine, and could be intermittant as well, like mine was.

If you have a hub assembly type bearing like mine, then it will be difficult to check if it is the bearing, but it can be checked by rotating the wheel by hand very very slowly and checking for ANY 'sticking' feeling, indicating that the motion is not smooth.

Hope this helps.

Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Thanks Johann.

I found some timken bearing hubs for the rear at R 750.00 ex VAT each, apperently timken are fairly good bearing AFIK?!? :?

Will do a check of the rear bearings sometime this week, there is a check one can do with play and the amount of torque reqired to turn the hub without the wheel fitted.

Will revert, am worried about failure of the bearings.

Timken is R 749.99 ex VAT each
OEM Mitsu is R 1828.00 ex VAT each

The CV's look good, no play on them and the boots have no cuts or tears in them, and I dont hear the typical rumbling noise associated with a CV failing. I hope it is the hubs as they are alot cheaper than the diff!! (R 20 300.00 !!!)

Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Hi Guys.

I eventually had some time to have the noise on my rear tyres looked at, and it was my right rear wheel hub bearing that was going. To figure out which one it was they lifted my car up onto the lift and put it into gear and felt the coils springs, the right one was vibrating like crazy!

I managed to source a T&T wheel hub bearing from Masterparts for my GEN3, for some reason they dont have the 3.5 V6 on the system, only the 3.2 DiD. It is priced at R749.12 ex VAT each, vs over R2200.00 ex VAT each at the stealers!!

So glad I did have it checked and replaced so that I did not have a wheel fall of somewhere very inconvienant!

Hi Nick, The wheel bearings you got from Masterparts, are that the Hub assembly as per the pic in the first post?

Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Hi Johann.

Yes it is the hub assembly as per jotto's post, including wheel studs complete with the splines for the side shafts coming out of the diff.

Sorry I did not take any pics, but it is identical to the OEM parts they took out, here is the part number from MarterParts - TH03011 - it is a T&T brand, imported apparently from Italy - so the saleman claims

Good luck.

Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Thanks, will most definitely give them a call and see if i can get the parts maybe couriered up here.

Most likely needing to replace both pajero's rear wheel bearings sourcing x4 at R750excl + courier cost should still work out far more cheaper than getting them at the stealers.

Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Does anyone know if there is a difference between the Manual and Automatic LWB rear wheel bearings?

Re: SWB 3.2 Did Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement
Just waiting for the fax. But x2 wheel hub assemblies and courier cost works to about R2000 compared to R2200 for 1 hub at the stealers.
