Tiptronic Issues?
Hi Guys

I have a 2004 3.8 Auto SWB. I took it in to my electrician yesterday to install some spots and activate the rear light cluster. Last night, I noticed that when I put the box in tiptronic mode and tried to gear down, nothing happened and the reverse lights activated. The "R" on the instrument panel also activated. I can gear up in tiptronic mode and in auto mode everything works well.

Where do I start and could my electrician have caused the problem when installing the spots?

Re: Tiptronic Issues?
sounds like faulty wiring under the console or a short in the wiring loom.

I would remove the covers of the gear levers and look for anything obvious out of place or chaffing.

Is the sparky sure he has not made a problem when activating the rear lights? Perhaps put a live (you said the problem occured at night, maybe taillight positive) feed on the reverse lights?

Hi Wilddog

Im not sure. I have taken the covers and gearnob off and I can find no obvious faults. The tiptrinic switch under the lever looks ok and no loose wires. My sparky has a diagnostic computer so gonna visit him again this afternoon and investigate further.

Thanks,

John.

Re: Tiptronic Issues?
diagnostic will only give error code at best. More than likely it won't pickup if live or ground is shorting (or wired wrong by sparky) to wrong wire.

Take it back to the sparky and tell him he made a booboo in a nice and he must either sort it out or revert back to how it was before (with refund) and take it somewhere else.

Hi Marius

Diagnostic gave no error at all and shows shift switch activating on up and down shift. Got there late so my Paj will be going back to my sparky on Monday.

So frustrating  !!!!!

Exactly the reason I don't like anyone touching my Paj! I prefer to do things myself but don't have the knowledge when it comes to electrical work so I thought best to take it to a "professional".

I've come to learn that there are very few professionals left.

Freek snr and Freek jnr at Mitspro are ones that have proven themselves to be diamonds among stones when it comes to mitsu. Not sure about their electrickery knowledge though.

John,

Maybe this is a silly sugestion, but why dont you unplug the newly activated rear light clusters? If your sparky did something wrong with the rear light clusters then with the lights unplugged, everything should revert to normal!

Hi Cloyd
I removed all the bulbs from the rear clusters and no change. I took the vehicle back to my sparky on Monday but he was sick and could not look at it. I will be going back to him tomorrow. Spoke to the guys at Mitsu and they say that my sparky could have pulled voltage from the wrong wire. Strange that my tiptronic downsift is now linked to my reverse lights?

I know I removed my tow bar electrical coupling and got ABS and ASC warning lights. Went away when I reconnected the coupling. So the electrical system is a bit sensitive. Best left alone unless you really know what your doing!

Gonna tell him to get it back to standard and see what happens.

Besides the tiptronic downshift my Paj runs beautifully. Just noticed that it is a quite a bit more thirsty than the 3.5 petrol. Although somehow Its easier to drive faster so think I do. I have just chipped it at SAC so maybe that will reduce fuel consumption slightly.

Cheers,

John.
