4 wheel engage/disengage
Hi Guys
I am new to the club and this is my first post. I have a 1997 GDI 3.5l V6 (received it last week) and looking for some help/advice please. The 4wheel drive seems to engage OK. But when disengaging I have to drive backwards and forwards till I see the light go off. Yesterday I though it was disengaged and started to drive, there was a loud "clank" from the front and then I realised it only disengaged then. It seems that there was no damage. Question: How do I get the disengagement process to work smoother and quicker. Ps. This vehicle was imported from Japan as I stay in Malawi. Needless to say I have yet to find a good mechanic here.

Have a look through here to troubleshoot the vacuum system. Other than that it could be low oil in the transfer case or sticky hubs.

Re: 4 wheel engage/disengage
The Gen 2 does not have hub locks, whether manual or auto, so the front wheels are always attached to the side shafts. There is a front axle disconnect device, though, which disconnects the right hand side front sideshaft from the diff when 2H is selected. This is vacuum actuated and is probably the culprit. Check that the disconnect device works smoothly and that you have no vacuum leaks.
