4x4 takes LOOONG to disengage
Hi Guys. As a new member of this forum, I may be posting this topic in the wrong place. I own a 2009 Pajero Sport. My problem is that whenever I engage 4x4 in any mode and would like to disengage it, it takes very long to disengage. I've even tried reverse! After quite a while it will eventually disengage. Is this normal?

use it more often to keep things lubed up and working properly. You may also have a vacuum leak - follow the pipes from the actuator shaft to look for perished or disconnected vacuum hoses.

The actuator shaft may be dry and need some lube. (look under the rubber boot)

Another thing to check is whether you have tyres with the same circumeference on the front and back. If there is a difference in circumference, some windup will be generated even in 4H, due to the presence of a viscous coupling in the transfer box and this will keep a little bit of load on the drivetrain, thus making disengagement difficult. When the drivetrain disengages from 4H, there might be a light thump as well.
  • If you have worn tyres on one of the axles and relatively new ones on the other, there could be a sizeable difference in circumference, even if the tyres are of the same brand and nominal size.
  • If you have tyres of different brands on the two axles, there might be differences in circumference despite being nominally the same size.
  • If you have tyres of different nominal sizes on the two axles there will obviously be differences in circumference

My sport does the same.. From day one.
Found it resolves quicker if I just drive normally.. Left right jiggle also helps.

I usually accelarate a little, then back off for a second or two, and then accelarate again and then it usually disengages.
