Hi there - I am thinking of fitting a long range tank and double battery system to my Pajero. At the moment I opeate with jerry cans and a national lunar portable pack, which works fine, but takes up too much space. Just a few questions:
DBS:
1. which is the best one to fit;
2. is there enough space in the engine compartment for a second battery?;
3. how many hella points should I have fitted and where?
LRT:
1. which would be the best one to fit;
2. what capacity should I look at;
3. will it interfere with gound clearance / departure angle?
Your input and comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys
Erik
Erik,
Your dual battery systm - It depands on how much you want to spend and how keen you are to say that you have a XYZ... duel battery system. The control system in my Pajero was installed by a person in Alberton. Francois Rossouw told my to go to Radio Units in Alberton, tel 011 907 1804/5 and ask for James. When I had my set installed, he was about 50% cheaper than the normal NL price. He also supplied the battery (102ah) and with the battery included the price was about on par with the NL controls.
Yes there is sufficient space in the engine bay for a 102AH battery but some dealers will tell you it will not fit.. I mare my own bracket and it works like a charm.
The number of Hella plugs depend on your own needs. I have a plug in each of the rear pillars next to the seatbelt mounting point and one on the rear of the console. I am going to add another next to it. I also have one in the front grillethat I can use without opening the bonnet.
I hope this will help

Erik, LR tank
Once again, it depends how much you want to spend. The LR tank sold by one of the 4x4 suppliers is suppose to take 45 lit, but I am yet to meet somebody that get more than 35 lit in it using normal filling methodes. It is also mounted in the most vulnerable position on a Pajero - behind the rear suspension and below the bin for the third row seat.
I designed and made my own stainless steel tank. It holds more than 100 lit, fits into the third row seat bin and has its own fuel pump and filter that are fitted behind the rear suspension and the seat bin. In my Pajero, it is basically a permanent installation but the tank can be removed within 15 minutes. If removed, my Pajero is back to the normal.
When I designed the tank, my Pajero was still under a maintenance contract with the result that it is not connected to the Pajero fuel system at all. It has its own filler and outlet pipe. When I need to refuel, I put the outlet pipe into the normal filler, switch on the pump using one of the HELLa plugs in the rear pillar, open a long and cold one from my Engel (connected to one of the HELLAs at the rear of the console) and wait for the pump to do its work.
When I mentioned my tank on this forum there were long stories about fuel spillage and fuel vapours inside My Pajero by people who have not seen the system. I can asure you, NO vapours or leaks inside the car.We have been on at least 10 trips with this tank and it works like a charm!!

David,
Duel battery and LR tank. I posted pictures some time ago but it took me ages to do - I am a BC person (before computers) and battles for hours to move pics to this forum. If you look back you should be able to find all the pics as well as for working tail lights, bash plates etc.
