Two-stroke oils should always be low-ash as they are 'total loss' lubricants, which are burned with the fuel in the two-cycle stage of the engine and it is important that they do not leave any deposits during the combustion phase.

Maybe we should start a thread and ask everybody to post their glowplugs with age, engine age and wether they use 2SO or not.

The diesel is not the main cause for deposits during the combustion prosess but the oil in the engine (in the sump) that is bring those deposits though to the combustion chamber via the ventilation system. That is where low ash oils come into play. If you do not use low ash oil, the deposits will be a problem. Using low ash oil (in the engine) will help to prevent the building up of deposits in the combustion chamber.

I will also ask the specialists at Chevron how much does the high sulpher content (even 50ppm is high for use in the modern diesel engines) in our diesel contributes to the bad deposits under discussion

yes the engine oil (and to a degree the diesel as well) leaves deposits, hence why we use 2SO to burn away exiting deposits and keep burning them away as they arrive.
