Vibrating 3.2 DiD
Hopefully you guys can give me the correct answer , after reading the forum i now have an idea.

When i am in mainly the higher gears and put engine under a bit of strain eg accelerate going up a hill the car vibrates badly(not all the time)The vibration seems to come from the back of the car. It seems better if i have a full load. I initially thought it was prop shaft and had it balanced but no different. From reading posts looks like flywheel /clutch. This is an expensive repair so dont want to do it if it is not the problem. How can i be reasonably sure what problem is.

Any suggestions of anybody in Somerset west /Strand area who can do job . ( Not agents)

Regards

Auto or manual?

Auto
- check trans fluid, if it's bad/wrong oil the lock up clutches judder when it tries to lock or disengage
- check the dynamic damper (block of metal) bolted to the rear propshaft by the transfer case side (remove it and see if it makes a difference)

Manual
- - check the dynamic damper (block of metal) bolted to the rear propshaft by the transfer case side (remove it and see if it makes a difference)
- if that doesn't help you probably have the dreaded DMF issue - which usually also shows it's neck at pull away (try pulling away in 2nd/3rd to accentuate the issue.

What is DMF issue? I have a similar vibration, the agents have had the car on a lift while engaging drivetrain and it apears to be tires gearbox mountings (which I know are very tired - waiting for stock to arrive)....can this be?

Re: Vibrating 3.2 DiD
Hi Mike

I have the exact same issue, been getting progressively worse as the Km's tick along. The propshaft is fine, removed the dampners as per Marius' suggestion, no effect. I am also dreading that it may be the DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel), but am not entirely convinced just yet. Have tried the pulloff as per Marius, but nothing. Mine only starts at 110 km/h and eds at 140 Km/h. So it is definitively speed related. It is at its worst when only just depressing the gas pedal, under the initial torque.

I am looking forward to seeing how this pans out with regards to the final solution. In the meantime I have decided it must maar break, then at least I know what the cause is.

If I find the cause before you guys, I will post the findings here.

Cheers,

Johann

Re: Vibrating 3.2 DiD
Gentlemen it seems my problem is the dreaded DMF . Took my car in 3 weeks ago and it is confirmed as DMF. But apparently none in the country so coming from Japan and i am meant to be going to Mozambique next week. My car only going to be ready in January.
Is the mechanic talking bull s... or could there be none in the country. This is going to be a very expensive exercise as now have to hire a 4x4 for 16 days for my holiday

Have you tried Parthunt (tel no for Gert is somewhere in the stickies) ?
Even if it is a second hand one in good nick?

Consider eliminating the DMF and go solid, as discussed elsewhere on the forum.

Dual Mass Flywheel

When it fails the damper collapse and you get the play in the 2 parts that cause the vibration.

Modern diesels put out very high torque at low rpms.
This results in the power delivery on the crankshaft being delivered in "pulses", rather than a smooth constant output.

This is smoothed out by introducing a dual mass flywheel.
It is in essence two flywheels with a system of springs to smooth out the power delivery.
