Aircon smels dusty
How do I clean the filters / evaporator box of my series 2's a/c system? The cold air smels like dust or mud. Aparantly the filters are dirty.

Re: Aircon smels dusty
I think a pollen filter will cure that. I rebuilt my A/C system on the jetta a while back and part of the process was replacing the heater core and replacing the foam on the vent flaps.

It still smelled like dust if the a/c isn't on - even after cleaning in there.

My pajero does the same as the jetta. If the a/c is on it smells clean but 5 seconds after I switch off the a/c it will smell dusty for 2 minutes and then go away.

Does anyone perhaps know of any other suppliers of pollen filters for the Pajero (Gen3 and 4) The stealers either don't have stock or they charge a fortune.

Vossie, try taking it out and giving it a good clean, mine was torn and buggered and had to be replaced and definately made a big difference, no more dust and AC worked excellent again!
Re: Aircon smels dusty
Hennie,

Welcome to a Pajero problem. I found the same problem after returning from dusty trips. I have identified two problems / ways to solve the dusty smell - it is real dust!!

The first is:

a. The pollen filter is not of the best quality. When I compare the Pajero filter with my Aidi's pollen filter one can see the difference. The Pajero filter looks like a filter intended ti keep pebbles out of the car whilst the Audi filter is extremely fine. I am in the process to modify the Pajero filter by fitting an Audi filter element in place of the the Pajero filter. If successful, this will be the first step - it will keep dust out of the aircon / ventilation system. I will keep you posted.

The second problem is the following:

b. You can clean the element and the filter housing as much as you like, but if you do not get ALL the dust out, it will always smell dusty. One of the places where the dust collect is on the fins of the impeller fan. You need a very fine (thin) brush to get in between the fins to get the dust off ( I am still trying to get a suitable brush). The dust is extremely fine and will drop off at random hence the smell.

Due to the fact that the dust has already gone through the filter and into the ventilation system it means that the dust is already in all the ventilation pipes and the only way of getting out will be to take all the pipes out - that will be a major job.

Incidentally, the Audi pollen filter is much bigger that the Pajero filter and quite a lot cheaper so by doing the "transplant" (filter element replacement) it will save money in the long run.

I will keep you posted.

Cloyd.
