Flywheel Pajero Gen 2

Morning

I have managed to bugger up my flywheel in an attempt to get bolts out of which the heads snapped when I mounted a new clutch.

Is is possible to get an aftermarket flywheel. Agents quote R3500 but might have to order. Parthunt R2500 for secondhand plus skimming then needs to be done +_ R300 which starts to lean more towards new one price wise.

Need some advice please. Can get a secondhand flywheel but it differs from the one I have. See pics attached.

It seems like the solid one is an older model,
'FR74' marking on back versus '4124' on mine.

Does anyone know the reason for the cavity. Is it to save weight only?

Appreciate any feedback.

not so much weight as thermal expansion (same principle as the notches on a cutting blade)

That makes sense. Then I need to try and find one similar to my old one. What does the lack of expansion do on the flywheel or otherwise why is it better to have more thermal expansion?

if you don't have thermal expansion the flywheel would warp pretty quickly.

it is then just an improvement on the older flywheel to shed weight and improve thermal expansion.

Another theory is that heavier flywheel is better than lighter due to more momentum. Ur thoughts on that?

Seems sensible but you have to use more energy to get the heavier weight moving first

The opposite is true as well.
Once the heavy flywheel has reached operating rpm, it stores a lot of kinetic energy, which makes for smooth operation.

A classic example of this (heavy flywheel) design was the petrol engine in the old Peugeot 404, which was renowned for it's smooth running and longevity.

I don't think the weight makes a big difference in economy - if any but it makes the throttle response slower and makes the revs climb slower.

That's why racers have lightened flywheels to improve throttle response and make it rev faster for double clutching etc.

Interesting. Throttle response might not be that significant but I can think that slower rev climbing will influence economy in some way. I have heard it mentioned that the Pajero is a high reving engine (or at least my model. Taking longer to get to higher revs will then possibly influence economy
