I have not had the oppertunity to tow really off road with the caravan but do camp reularly at Bushcamps where I can to "acclimatise" myself and check out things like battery life, water usage etc especially ice use. This will be the first of many trips to come as me and Swambo is now sort of alone with all kids out of the house- or sort of
Last one is going studying this year and this will give me more oppertunities to explore the wild.

just one other question for those in the know
Is it possible to travel from the Sendelingsdrift to Luderitz on the road Witputz and Aus past Rosh Pinah, I would assume it is a salt road or a sand road or even a gravel road On the map I have it shows as earth/tracks and a distace of 165 km. I do not have all the recovery equipment and do not want to get into trouble on that road. Any info

If you travel north from Sendelingsdrift, you will take the D212 (gravel) to Rosh Pinah - this is a short distance. Then, the C13 (tar) north to Aus. Anything to the west of this route is the restricted "Sperrgebiet".

At Aus, you will travel west along the B4 (tar) to Luderitz. Total route is around 300km.

I'm not sure what you mean by Witputz ?

I did a similar trip in June/July 2011.
I attach my trip report - hopefully it contains some useful info.

As for towing in the Richtersveld - it was not a problem, but you need to take your time.

I did not stay @ Sendelingsdrift, but campsite does not look great. Rather treat yourself to a bungalow.

When you going? We'll be doing another trip there in April.

You shouldnt have any problems in the Richtersveld, and as CATS say Akkedis Pass will be perhaps the trickiest and I would not do the Richtersberg - De Hoop section along the river at all with anything attached to the back.

We will be in the Richtersveld NP during the week of 26 to 30 March!

Taking the Xplorer this time. Anybody else there during that time?

Sounds like a Pajero Club GTG to me . We'll probably be towing an Echo 3 with 2 Hiluxes, a Scoobie and an Isuzu escorting me if I have issues

For those that will be in the Richtersveld March/April what are your itineraries? Ours is pretty much final except for the week in Southern Nam.

Paw-by-Paw,

1. We did a trip in December 2010 o thee Namibian side of the river from Noord Oewer along the Orange river to where our road joined up with the road from Sendelingsdrift to Rosh Pinah ( about 2mk from Sendeling). From there the road is unpaved to Rosh Pinah and from there tar - all the way to Luderitz. In a Pajero the road was in excellent condition.

I agree with Cloyd...

We left the park via Helkloof, and then drove the gravel roads along the edge of the Richtersveld Conservancy via Eksteensfontein to the N7 (Vioolsdrift), where we camped for the night. We had to do this as one of our friends didn't have their passport.

I would rather leave via Sendelingsdift and cross over to Namibia, and drive along the Orange river on the Nambian side - the gravel roads are much better, and more scenic! Then camp for a night or two at Amanzi Trails (Abiqua).
