Re: BFG A/T chipping :(
My father had a similar experience on his relatively new BFG A/Ts on his prado after doing the Attequas Ox-wagon trail - major chunks fell out.

The BFGs dont seem to like rocks :(

The Michelin rep (who are the agents for importing BFG tyres) phoned me to discuss and also inspired confidence that ill be looked after. However, he reckons the tyres are doing it because they worked too hard at some stage in it's life amd that it hasnt seen enough gravel use. He saysnthey are supposed to see 50% gravel. My response was that it hasnthe same life conditions as my work bakkie that has done about 80000km on coopers and shows no sign of chipping. The previous maxtreks i had also showed no signs of chipping. My boss's girlfriend's triton also has BFG A/T and drives the same type of gravel percentage and shows no signs of chipping. I also told him that my father has BFG A/T on his treg with twice the power of my car and shows no signs of chipping and those work as hard if not harder. I also told him that i grew up with BFG t.yres on my dad's pajero and that showed no signs of chipping. I also told him that i have been watching clean cars in town that sees more tar than mine and none of them with BFG shows the signs of mine.

The Michelin rep is following up with BFG. He is coming down to East London in a couple of weeks.

I have in the meantime rotated the tyres as they are due. Im keeping my side clean.

if they can prove that im at fault ill live with it but i know these tyres are showing more damage than what i could have subjected them to. The crux is that all 4 shows the same damage with the same manufacturer batch code on ALL of the tread.

Re: BFG A/T chipping :(
Marius, my BFG AT's are also chipping, same as yours, also on around 15000km's and have been rotated 5000 km's ago. How do you check the batch number?

Tim from Michelin phoned me this morning. He will look at my tyres around lunchtime.

I will let you know what the outcome is.

Re: BFG A/T chipping :(
so

first they check tyre depth, pressures, shocks and alignment. All perfect.

In short the conversation ended up like so....

Then they ask my application to which I describe that it is not a work car but my driveway is effectively 4km of graded gravel road. We agree that the tyre is made for my application.

They then said that it is probably the gravel chipping my tyres due to the the amount of off road I do. I argue that we have just agreed that the tyres are made for my application. I also argue that we have a triton doing the same roads and show no signs of chipping. I argue that I have a work bakkie on coopers showing no signs of chipping and that we had a ford on hankook a/t tyres showing no signs of chipping.

He then argues that my car is heavier than the bakkie.

I argue that my work bakkie on coopers carries heavy loads everyday. I argue that my dad's touareg is heavier and more powerful and doesn't chip under similar conditions. I also argue that I have not seen any vehicle (with dirt or without) that shows signs of chipping.

The revert back to the application being the cause even though the tyre was designed for it.

The discussion got heated after this contradiction went around about 5 times. I also pointed the separation of the compound on the corners of the tread going to the sidewall.

Eventually they concluded that this was within spec for the tyre and that it is safe to use and will pay me pro rata left over tread if I don't get at least 80k out of them. They recommend that the BFG is not suited for my application (even though they said it was in the beginning) and recommend I should have used KM2's.

I said what if the compound fails in the middle of nowhere - are you gonna fetch me and stand over me and my wife's grave?

I thanked them for wasting my time and blatantly contradicting themselves when there's clearly an issue and buggered off.

BFG just lost a client and I will never endorse BFG again even though I think the good batches are good tyres but I won't stand for BS'ing me when it's apparent that my set was part of a bad batch.

PS : Apparently BFG shouldn't be used on gravel - get KM2's instead. Bloody hypocrites!

BS!

Post on HelloPeter.

What about the Consumer Protection Act?

I have always promoted BFGs, but that has now changed.
I will NEVER buy another BFG,
I will never recommend it,
I will STRONGLY discourage people from buying them.

Re: BFG A/T chipping :(
I am not letting this rest. I urgently ask that all BFG A/T owners post a pic of their tread with a short description of usage and the kilometers covered so far.
