Gerrit Loubser wrote:macjohnw, I agree that if you can feel the shudder in the steering wheel that the front discs are to blame, but the rears are quite prone to develop problems as well. Braking becomes noticeably jerky, especially the last couple of meters, just before the vehicle comes to a standstill.
Yes, this is exactly how it feels.

Maybe you should check if a wheel bearing is not the cause before replacing discs. Meaning it might be too loose as well.
In my experience I had the pistons in the caliper got stuck due to dirt . I removed the calipers, bought new sealing kit ,took pistons out and took fine steelwool with oil and polished them again. It seems the problem is now solved.
I changed both front wheel bearings as well.
You could also check if there is not a ball joint faulty as well as this might also transfer to wheel and feel like brake whobble.
Just some pointers and I am no specialist but after changing all the ball joints on my front suspension as well above mentioned procedure my problem seems to be away.
I must add that my car is much older than yours.
p_b_p,

thanks, the bearings and ball joints seem fine.

The dealers had all four discs on my Paj skimmed to solve a judder issue (under the maint plan - so no idea at what cost). I've now done approx 4000km and it is still smooth as a baby's cheek.

PS... did you fly off the Barberton mountains last week?
I argued the same as Cats and had my front disks skimmed and new pads fitted at the same time (R1100) - this seems to have stopped the shuddering.

I did not do anything to the back disks as I first wanted to see what effect the newly skimmed front disks & pads had - the rocking-motion when stopping still continues though, so my guess seems to be right.

Roelf - yes, we did fly of Lone Tree Hill in Barberton a week back. Our club organised the event - the weather was good and we had a great week thanks. You should come up some time for a tandem flight!

Re: Front disk: wobbling/shuddering when braking
I am now a little off the topic here but will the load sensing device not have an effect when not operating correctly?
Maybe giving more pressure as needed . I still can not figure out how that setup works but was advised a while ago to disconnect it . I did not as I am still trying to work out the mechanics of this thing.

Re: Front disk: wobbling/shuddering when braking
Some feedback: I replaced the reark break pads and also skimmed the back discs. Problem solved - no more wobbling/rocking motions when stopping! Smooth as a baby's butt. Will see how long it will last.

Re: Front disk: wobbling/shuddering when braking: SOLVED!
Some feedback on the thread:

I previously had all four my discs skimmed and also replaced the pads - the problem was somehow resolved but returned very shortly there after. I could not figure out if it was the front or the back, but my guess was the back, seeing that it was not a shuddering effect but a rocking one.

Yesterday I bought and installed two new rear brake discs and the problem has vanished. No more "rocking" effect when stopping. It seems like the discs were somehow very slightly warped. Thus it was the back discs.

As advised before by other members (cant recall who at the moment) - don't skim the discs, just replace and get it over with otherwise: penny wise pound foolish. It had nearly cost me double due to the skimming exercise.
Re: Front disk: wobbling/shuddering when braking: SOLVED!
Gents
went through a lot of pains (and cash) with shuddering brakes.
Replaced the front units with Powerbrake - no solution but lekker brakes.
I lost 3 sets of rear discs due to warping. After a long search and finding a clever bloke we found that the rear trailing arms bushes were shot. This cannot be tested or seen with a ghwala or hand manipulation - you have to dismantle and take them off.
This caused uneven movement which in turn led to shuddering which in turn lead to discs heating up to the extent that they lost their metallurgical properties causing high spots.ABS system fighting the uneven movement/braking did not help either.
Replaced them = end of problem.
Nearly sold the Pajero because I was gatvol.Maybe still sell it because it is fixed now... ;)

Re: Front disk: wobbling/shuddering when braking: SOLVED!
Hi all

I baught my 2005 Pajero swb end last year. We also noticed a shuddering when we braiked and it also was only when I almost came to a stand still. I sent it back to the car dealer and the said that it is the ABS sensor that's cloged up. So the ABS is not working lekker and it tells the pc that someting is wrong. They cleaned it and since then no problem at all I've driven it for 10k km now and its still fine.

Whent hunting this long weekend and saw that my front left outside pad was finished. ALL the others was fine. Just that one. Almost metal on metal. Now in Musina there is no Stealers. Had to go to a spare shop and they had pads in stock! Cant remember the name though but its made in Japan. I see everybody says Stealers only for brake pads. Why not the after market ones?

Re: Front disk: wobbling/shuddering when braking: SOLVED!
Whilst all of the postings regarding brake shudder are quite old, I have a 2010 Pajero 3.2 GLS that has now done 80,000 km's and have had endless and continuous problems with the brakes. The vehicle has just come out of maintenance plan and has had the front and back brake discs either skimmed or replaced every 20,000 km. I have been told by 2 sources from within Mitsubishi workshops that the bottom line is that the Mitsubishi brake discs are not sufficiently hardened during manufacture and are warping as a result of heat build up. I was also told to try Morelli discs but I see from previous postings that Powerbrake discs also seem to work.
Can anybody give me any recent solutions in this regard and where I can purchase Morelli discs?
