3.2 DiD - Autobox Problems
I lately have a very weird thing happening on my car. When towing uphill, I get a strange noise – sounds like something flapping in the wind / or a petrol engine “ping”, emanating from the auto-box!

Together with this, both Traction Control and Anti-Skid lights come on. On a long uphill, the engine temp also rises to about ¾.

Taking my foot off the accelerator stops the noise and the lights go off, but it returns as soon as you apply power again. Going downhill or on a flat road – all is normal.
The noise disappears in 3rd gear, but is there in both 4th and 5th.

I have had the car on the Dyno at Dastek to try and reproduce the conditions, but no luck. (Only found out afterwards that they did al the tests in 3rd gear only) :(

Any ideas or recommendations will be appreciated.

Thanks

Why dont you do the diagnostic test on the trans and check if there's any fauld codes.
Re: 3.2 DiD - Autobox Problems
I remind you of Sakkie Hattingh (of Hattingh Motors in Centurion)'s old adage:

"Did you stop the car, or did the car stop itself? The cost differs by orders of magnitude!"

Don't wait for the vehicle to stop itself!

These type of noises seldom go away by themselves. They get worse until a fatal failure occurs.

Have it checked by a specialist (where to find, I dunno!), before it gets worse.
When last was it serviced and fluids changed?

check basics first

- auto oil cherry red?
- scan and check error codes as per my DIY - http://direct.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/vi ... =52&t=3193
- feel free play on propshafts
- check engine mountings
- check diff mountings
- check freeplay in wheel bearings

Hi Marius,

What have the engine and gearbox mountings possibly got to do with this?

the mountings may be fatigued and under load cause an off resonance that may cause the noise.

Oil was replaced at the last service (180K Km's) Color and level checks out fine.

I get the following error codes:

Engine Check Light:
- 43: Timing Control Valve System
- 16: Boost Air Temperature System

Center Diff Lock Light
- Continious Flash - No Code! :?:

Any ideas?

Re: 3.2 DiD - Autobox Problems
check the traction control belt mechanism.... or something to that effect. Mine was playing up last year and that was one of the listed potential causes. Turned out not to be the case, but check it anyway.

Thats strange. A flashing light is usually paired with a code. Did you check the neutral light flashes as well?
