Oil changes (Drivetrain)
Smee again...

I am looking at doing a oil check on all the diffs and if any other 4x4 thingys that might need a good top up or grease before doing a trip. This will be our first real 4x4 trip in the Pajero and I don't want to find out half way that I needed to top up or grease the central diff.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Oh and by the way 4E(Marius) it seems that the last radiator flush cleaned out the heater core, she's a working like a charm.THANX BOET!!!!! : :D :D :D :D :D

Re: Oil changes
That's great news. Keep an eye on the coolant level as flushing exposes possible leaks that was blocked by gunk before. On the plus side your radiator will exchange more heat making for more efficient cooling.

The gearbox and diff oils are easily checked.

get the correct oil ( can't remember the details - just check your owner's manual ) and on the diffs and gearbox and transfer case you will have two bolts for each of them ( One at the lowest point for draining and higher up for filling ).

Clean around the top bolts to make sure no dirt gets in there.

Remove the top bolt and fill with oil ( using the spout that comes with the 500ml bottles ) until it starts pouring out. Wipe with cloth and put the bolt back in with a new copper washer ( or turn the original one around if it is still in good condition )

having 254 000km on the clock, and not knowing if this was ever done, would you say its worth it to just drain them and refill and get it over with?

Re: Oil changes
jip. It is definite peace of mind. I'm sure there can be now worse feeling than when your diff slowly starts whining as you see your wallet grow thinner and thinner. :(

I spend a lot on preventative maintenance on my cars - which some of it might not be necessary but I have had no major problem.

Re: Oil changes
Hi.
I also want to drain my pajero`s oil. With also 253000km on the clock and don`t know when last it had a oil change. It`s a 1998 2.8Tdi pajero Glx swb. I don`t have a owners manual so don`t know what oil to use. My question is what oil to use in Gearbox, Tranfer case and the diffs? Do i use the same oil in front and rear diff? Special oil for lsd?

Re: Oil changes
caltex delo 400 for engine
caltex easyshift for gearbox and transfer case
I would use mitsu dealer oil for lsd at the rear and caltex gl-5 spec oil for front diff.
Re: Oil changes
EasyShift is API GL-4 , and thus not suitable for transfer cases and diffs which need API GL-5 spec.
RECOMMENDED FOR

Easyshift is recommended for front wheel drive transaxle gear boxes and other manual transmissions; steering boxes and automotive hypoid and spiral bevel axles operating under moderate loads where manufacturers call for an API GL-4, SAE 75W-90 gear lubricant. Such manufacturers include Ford, G.M.H., Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Daihatsu and others.

Easyshift is particularly applicable to synchromesh gear boxes which utilise brass synchromesh rings which may experience corrosion problems with an API GL-5 lubricant.

Easyshift may be used where SAE 75W, 80W, 85W, 90 and 80W-90 GL-4 lubricants are stipulated and hence assists in the rationalisation of gear oils.

It is not recommended for use in hypoid differentials where API GL-5 performance is required.

Re: Oil changes
Oops. Completely forgot about the different spec oil for the transfer case. Thanks for catching me there.

Re: Oil changes
Thanks 4e`s
Now I can get that sorted, only problem is that i`m about 100km from the nearest dealer to get the rear diff oil. Will phone them and ask if they can give me the specs of the oil for the lsd.
Thanks again

Re: Oil changes
Thanx you lot.

Here are some info I got from the stealers.

Gearbox - takes 4l - 75X90
Transfer case - Takes 2.5l - 75W90
Front Diff - Takes 2l - 80W90
Centre Diff - Takes 2.5l - 80W90

Does this sound about right?? I had it planned for the weekend past bu wanted to be sure before I proceed.
Should I replace seals while I'm there??
