Hi people
This past weekend I have noticed that my car does not shift into 4th gear if I drive with the overdrive off and when I engage overdrive it will just briefly go into 4th but then shifts straight into 5th gear and when I want to shift down, it skips 4th and goes straight into 3rd again. Does anybody know if this is a major problem or what I could do to try and sort this problem out? I also posted in the electrical part of this forum about my 4H not showing on the dash indicator and thought it was the bulbs, but after changing the bulbs and reading about the super select 4wd Im not sure whether it does engage into 4wd or not, what happens is when it is in 2H the lights show that it is in 2wd, but when I shift into 4H, no other lights come on, but will sometimes after shifting a couple of times just flicker briefly, so how will I know if it is engaged or not?
Sorry for asking about two things, but I would really like to get some help on both matters.
Any help will be appreciated greatly!
Thanx
Piera
As far as I know the Gen 2's only had a 4-speed auto?Piera wrote:Hi people

I have a Gen 2 (diesel) auto, and it only has a 4-speed box.
Hi Jaco
Thanx for the speedy response. Now I feel like a complete ass, I was under the impresion that it has got 5 gears and the reason being when overdrive is on, shifting up from 3rd, the revs would drop but then drop again, which makes it seem like it is shifting twice? Im sorry if this was a very uninformed topic, but thax for helping me out, Im very new to all of this and was driving a 1.4 polo, so have no idea about 4x4s.
any help with the engagement of 4wd will still be welcome
Thanx

changing from third to fourth the revs will drop and then when the torque converter locks the revs will drop some more slightly.
If you then floor it the revs will rise slightly as the torque converter unlocks and then rise a lot as it changes back to third.

Thanx, this makes a lot more sense now and also takes a huge worry off my shoulders! I played around with the 4wd lever this afternoon and the indicator lights for showing it is engaged in 4wd started blinking, so now when I shift into 4H the lights just keep blinking and I dont think it is engaging into 4wd and also the right front wheel makes a noise when I turn right as a cv would, but only does it when it is in 4H and not 2H, so could this mean that the hub is not engaging and there for prevents the car from engaging into 4wd? I also noticed that the diff lock light was blinking together with the 4wd lights for a while but managed to get it off when I reversed the car in a straight line and it has not come on again, but the 4wd lights keep blinking when I shift into 4wd.
Please can anyone help in this regard?

Sounds like the front diff is struggling to engage to the Right side shaft. Remove the actuator shaft boot and spray liberally with tool in a can to both clean and lubricate the actuator shaft.

I will give it a try, thax. Have you perhaps got a pic to send me so I would know what to look for. If you can.
Thax again!

Thanx man. I will give it a try as soon as I get a chance. Will Q20 work fine or should I use something else?
Q20/WD40/Tool in a can
They will all work!
