Gearbox - jumping out of 1st gear (Di-D)
hi all,
i hope someone can help me :| - i recently found my 3.2 jumping out of 1st gear - however if i firmly engage 1st, this does not happen - i actually hope it could be a bush or something that is a little worn?
Sound advice, if you want to enter in a BBBEE business venture? Think twice! Make sure your i's are dotted and t's are crossed :ugeek:

I had this issue on my Gen 2 where it jumped out of third gear and found the third ring gear to have worn out. Suspect this is due to the main bearings on the gearbox that is worn out and cause play.

I had the same problem with my 2.8 Tdi Rodeo. Had to have the gearbox removed and replaced a sincro. Costs about R3750.00 at Truck & Transmission.

What is the mileage on your box? This seems to be a 'common' problem on the Gen3 3.2 Did Manuals with over 200 000km on the clock. Mine did the same some time ago. Unfortunately no other way to fix it than to drop the gearbox and fix. Not too expensive if there are not other stuff that needs fixing. The problem with the manual is that it also has the DMF(Dual Mass Flywheel) which often gives hassles later in its life. One must make the call to replace this VERY expensive item and the clutch as well when opening the gearbox to fix retaining ring/plate, which is the cause for the gearbox slipping/jumping out of first gear.

hey chaps,

Have the same problem here, on my SWB Pajero 2002 175 00km. Took it to the dealer in Humansdorp they phoned me and said that they can not get the 1st gear to jump out. There advice is ride it until it breaks then its worth trying to find "whatever" broke and fix it.
I don't like there approach as we wife drives the car during the week with our two little ones.
I also prefer being proactive rather than reactive.

How do I approach the problem?
The dealer is not sure what cause of the problem is so this can become an expensive exercise.

The problem is the clutch retaining plate that wear out. Phone Centurion Gearbox and Diff and they might be able to explain better as they know these boxes pretty well and possibly also direct you to a reliable specialist in your area to assist.

Read my post and link earlier in this thread for more info.
