When I engage 4 Ll and driving downhill, the Paj (1998 LWB) goes down a bit fast that create the suspicion that my 4Ll does not engage. How can I test to see if it is still working?
Look at your rev counter, it should read about twice as much for the same speed in 4h

You don't mention how much experience you ave with your vehicle, but I'd also ask, whether it is petrol or diesel, auto or manual.
As henk says, the rev counter is your most obvious pointer, but in addition, the Pajero's low rangle is not extremely low, the petrol does not have the engine braking that the diesel does, and an auto box can run away unless locked.

Thanks for the guidance. I have had my Pajero for about two years now and have done a number of off road trials as well as a training course about a year ago at Atlantis. My Pajero is a V6 3.5l petrol GLS, long wheel base with an automatic gearbox.. Hope that helps. I will have a look at the rev counter and see if I can figure it out.
