Correct. The fuel consumption data is calculated from the fuel injector opening signal data on the petrol V6. Of course this is only possible with electronically controlled injectors, as on the fuel injected petrol motors and on the new Gen 4 Common Rail DiD motor. The older DiD motor does have an electronically controlled diesel injector pump, but the injectors are not individually controlled electronically, so the ECU is unaware how much of the delivered fuel volume was injected and how much returned.

Actually the trip meter screen is available on the RV meter in DiD Gen 3's as well if you go into the system setup screen and define the vehicle as a petrol version. Of course this makes no sense to do, because the trip computer does not function: it does not get the necessary information from the engine ECU.

The system setup screen is also used to tell the RV meter wheter it is installed in a LWB or SWB vehicle (fuel tank size differs).

This in an intersting read, might give it a go at some later stage.

HI all

Was reading this thread and saw that you can get your cars fuel consumption.
Please advise on how to do that. It would be appreciated.

Re: Gen 3 CD player - Replace or repair ?
Hi Lowrange,

I replaced my factory head unit with an aftermarket unit with built in CD player. I disconnected the 6 CD changer and all the functions on the display unit still works execept for the radio station info.

Re: Gen 3 CD player - Replace or repair ?
I've been making some headway into the 'DISP' button debacle.
I found a site which helped me :

http://www.tehnomagazin.com/Auto-radio- ... nector.htm

And this thread still awaits a reply :
http://forums.finalgear.com/questions-a ... ton-53262/

However I have still not managed to get the factory radio out of the car. Mine is the type with 4 holes around the fascia. Either my screwdrivers aren't long enough to reach the screws or I am missing some trick-of-the-trade. Any helpful hints?

I managed to get the radio service manuals for some older Mitsubishi units, but not for the one I have in my Gen 3. Once I have removed it, I'll be able to get the model number and dig around the net more. The service manuals contain an excessive amount of detail about the unit, including all the PCB layouts, wiring diagrams and component lists.

Re: Gen 3 CD player - Replace or repair ?
Three pieces of useful information for those looking to replace the factory radio :

1) The factory unit is removed using what the sound place called 'a centerlock tool set', which is basically 4 pieces of thick wire which concurrently depress the 4 tabs holding the unit in place. I think you could do the same thing using 4 correctly sized screwdrivers.

2) One can purchase a wiring adapter which allows you to easily replace the factory unit, while avoiding tapping into the factory wiring and leaving an irrevocable mess in the process. At quite a cost though - R300 :o But worth it in my opinion.

3) Even with the factory unit gone, the fuel consumption in my petrol gen 3 seems to be reading correctly, so I really do think it will be a case of rewiring a push button to the old display connector to revive the full functionality of the trip computer. Will update once I have figured it out.

Hi Parabola

Have you tried pressing one of the three buttons on the display unit while the head unit/radio is out? Just a thought.

I am also very interested in this, as I want mp3 player, but like the fuel consumption/range/average speed feature too much. Where did you find the workshop manuals for the radio??

Re: Gen 3 CD player - Replace or repair ?
Personally I prefer the original radio and display.
I bought my 2003 DiD with a broken CD player(would not accept any CD’s) I removed the unit, opened it up, cleaned the lens, and it worked like a charm. Didn’t cost me a cent either. Let me know if you need help, I’ll gladly assist.
You can easily remove the radio by using 4 large pop rivets(as big as you can fit in the hole) Insert the long end of the rivets(the part that would normally go into the rivet gun) into each of the 4 holes. Gently squeeze the heads of the rivets(thick part sticking out) towards each other. Pull the radio out while you wiggle the radio slightly(by the rivets). As soon as the radio moved (about 5mm is enough) it means that the locks have released, so you can grab the radio and just pull it out.
To refit the radio, simply slide it into place (without rivets) while pulling the top of the radio towards you, and pushing the bottom in. This is to lift the back of the radio in order to ensure that the rubber mounting at the back finds its spot easily. Push the radio until you hear a “click”, as the locks engage again, preventing your radio from landing in the centre console.
If it’s true that the petrol model’s fuel calculations are also done by the radio, but you STILL insist on fitting an aftermarket radio, I would do the following:
Mount the old radio somewhere in/underneath the dash (you don’t need access to it) with the power and display connections attached, remove the speaker connections. Fit the new radio in its place’ connect it to the speakers and power, and Bob’s-ur Uncle! You have a brand new mp3 player in your face while the old radio is somewhere in the dark, quietly making fuel calculations for the display module! Note that the display module will display the old radio’s settings when selected although the sound will come from the new radio.
Let me know if you need help, I’ll gladly assist, otherwise any decent “sound shop” should be able to do this for you. If there is enough demand for this, I’m sure I can even make up a DIY wiring harness for this.

Fuel consumption meter works fine, and I can reset the meter using the button under the LCD. Can't access the other stats though. The factory unit display connector only has 4 wires coming from it, so I don't think it'll be too difficult to wire something up to replace the 'disp' button on the factory radio. Can't seem to find the wiring diagram though.

Re: Gen 3 CD player - Replace or repair ?
Hey all

I recently got my hands on my first pajero 2005 3.2DiD SWB :)

First port of call is to get a USB able cd player in the pajero.

Does anyone know where I can get the wiring harness to link factory to JVC

Thanks :)
