Hi,
since 2-days ago she makes a rumbling/thundering noise when free-wheeling. Applying slight throttle then it goes away, lift the right foot to free-wheel then it is there again.
Sounds/feel like a bad case of a flat tyre, not a vibration but more like a roughness in the tyres/road.
Anyone experienced this?
Any ideas on trouble-shooting?
She's a 2005 LWB 3.2DiD Auto, 170000km on the clock.
HI,
Marius, I checked and that shaft/bearing seems solid, thx,
a better description of the problem is that of a feeling of running on very rough tyres. The vibration and sound seems to be part of the rear drivetrain.
It is becomming worse so last night I spend some time inspecting things.
Did this while she was with all-fours on the ground.
No detectable wheel play when rocked side-to-side at each wheel.
Crawled underneath and checked all things possible for play in the wrong direction.
The only thing I found as follow:
The drive shaft going from gearbox to rear diff seem to have play when turned by hand, with almost no experience in this I still feel it is to much, it also seems to have play when grabbing it and push/pulling it towards/away from myself.
Is this shaft suppose to have play in it?
Any known issues around this area, specifically at the gearbox side of the shaft?

forgot to mention, this morning the vibration and noise is much better after me fidling around and rocking/pulling/shaking things last night.
shafts can have play when trying to turn it, but pulling and pushing should have play.
Your Universal joint or the high speed CV joint might be shot.

I also had a strange noise originating from my rear drivetrain, and it only happened while freewheeling.
On closer inspection I found that the diff mounting bushes were copletely worn out.
The bushes are part numbers 41052B and 41052C as well as 34224 in the diagram below(Diagram courtesy of 4ePikanini).
After replacing the bushes the noise and vibration was gone and the drivtrain felt super solid.
Please note that part 34224 is very expensive, as it includes the aluminium sub frame that the bushes are pressed into. The price of this part is in the region of R 5600-00. Part numbers 41052B and 41052B will set you back about R 200-00 each.
I had the bushes that fit into part 34224 made up by a suspension shop for R300 each.
You can also buy aftermarket diff mounting bushes here:
Front(41052B and C):Milner off Road : Rear Diff Bushes (Front)
Rear(Bushes that press into 34224):Milner off Road: Rear Diff bushes (Rear)

Thx. guys
@Marius, I had a look at the manual downloaded from this site, it seems the rear propshaft cant be serviced, some special carbon something shaft, is this true? how then would I change the UV/CV joint ?
@Stephan, are these bushes easy to replace i.e. can I do it at home with normal tools? or do i need special lifts/jacks/presses/pullers?

Hi Neil,
I don't think you will be able to replace those with normal tools, not the front ones at least.
Mine was done by a suspension shop.
Hi 4ePikanini,
Do you have a similar drawing of the Front suspension that you can post?
When I drive thete is a Clac-clac noise coming from the Front suspension.
I have jerked and pulled the front wheels of my 2000 CK Paj, but cannot locate which rubber or joint is worn. Top to bottom and side to side. Just randomly buying the various Tie-rod ends and Rubber bushes and joints is a bit expensive process of elimination.
My last test is to have the wheel hanging just off the ground and to lever it up and down and then try and see which one is the culprit.
Then at least I can send the pic to Mitsubishihi and order the right part.
Your help will be appreciated.

MMC ASA doesn't give very good images of the front suspension. You can maybe check the documentation side of the website for a manual.
But climb underneath the front right of the car. Look behind the wheel for the cv joint covered in a ribbed rubber cover. Fiollow the shaft that comes out of it to the inner cv joint covered by yet another ribbed rubber cover. That CV is connected to a green circular receiver cup. Take that by hand and feel for movement up and down and side to side. (rotary movement is fine but lateral or horizontal play.)
If there is play then the inner shaft bearing has failed like mine.
Other than that I would recommend checking out the high speed CV joint on the front propshaft.
