2008 GLX Auto goes into 3rd gear safety mode
In October 2011 I traded my trusty Colt in on a 2008 GLX with 100 000 ks from Mitsubishi agents. I had a speed control and rear PDC fitted through the agent. In February it tripped into 3rd gear and would not change up or down. It spent 6 weeks with the agents while pressures, valves and Gearbox CPU's were checked. Eventually the 2 accessories were disconnected, the CPU reset and the vehicle returned. The problem was blamed on bad connections made when installing the Speed control and PDC. Over Easter the problem re-occurred. Another 3 weeks in the workshop.A Mitsubishi expert was flown down from JHB with a new CPU. The problem has re-occurred. All accessories have been completely removed. They are baffled.
Anybody got any advice?
I love the Pajero and do not want to give it up.

Hi. I'm guessing you have the Gen 4, Automatic?

I had a similar thing, though luckily only for a short while, and it ended up being one of the sensor cables (7 of them from my memory) which had somehow been cut.
Even after soldering, the CPU did not recognize the signal and all seven had to be replaced and CPU reset. Havent had a problem since then. Possibly its that?

Thanks
I also suspect the wiring. The speed control was badly fitted with soldered and unsoldered joints etc. Anyway that has all been removed but I will tell them that they should replace all the affected wires. I missed an earlier post in March which suggested that the filter in the gearbox should be changed. All pressure readings are OK but they will check the filter as well.
Re: 2008 GLX Auto goes into 3rd gear safety mode
After nearly 5 months I have finally have my Pajero back and in full working order.ie all 5 gears available.
Eventually the local agents were running tests and emailing results to Japan. In the end two sensors were sent out from Japan and replaced. The CPU was reset and problem solved. Hopefully!!! as I am leaving for a 5 week trip to Botswana in September and do not want to do it in 3rd gear.
Mitsu Japan were very cross that an aftermarket speed control and reversing sensors had been fitted as this is strictly forbidden. It was badly wired with twisted wire joints.
Anyway, the agents picked up all the costs so it was only patience required on my side.

A scan with the MUT II tool should give an indication of where to start looking.

Roryb,

Re: 2008 GLX Auto goes into 3rd gear safety mode
Thanks for the replies.
Guess what. The Pajero is back in the workshop and back in 3rd gear. These guys, Maritime Motors who are the Port Elizabeth agents, do not seem to know what more to do. I am told that the local MD is talking to the Mitsu SA MD and the Japs are involved.
I will mention the MUT 11 tool to them. (what is it ?)Their computer has some diagnostic program which they run, and results were communicated to Japan. That resulted in the two new sensors being fitted. It ran ok of a few days then defaulted into 3rd again last Thursday. They say the gearbox is Ok so it must be electrical. I have suggested that they talk to some non Mitsu gearbox specialists.
I am crying!!!! Can somebody please help?

I maintain that a scan will reveal an error code. That will tell you which wire to chase in order to find the dodgy connection from wiring modifications (I'll bet you a beer it's faulty or grounding cable from where they modified the wiring)

If you don't come right, let me know and I'll see if I can plan a trip to PE to have a look at it for you end of August. I don't guarantee I can fix it (I am by no means an expert or mechanic/electrician) but I'll try to have a look. I have studied enough of the gen3 manual to know how these boxes's brains work..... I think. ;)

Auto boxes are complicated so my situation will almost certainly be different to yours, but mine is so expensive it is worth noting.
My 2003 Pajero (190,000km always serviced) had the same symptoms (3rd gear, flashing N), about 6 times in one weekend.
Restarting the engine temporarily removed the problem.
A lot of recent hi-speed touring on muddy roads pointed to a dislodged sensor.
A v experienced auto-trans guy checked the codes. All they indicated was that it had failed to change into 1,2,4,5. He cleared the codes and asked me to return if it happened again, and hopefully the new code would isolate the problem sensor.
Fluid was fine.
All was well for 2 weeks.
Then the transmission temperature warning light came on. I slowed down until the next fuel stop (it was a dark night and raining).
After a while the light went off so I bought some fluid and resumed my journey.
Very quickly the light came on again. There was a leak somewhere but I couldn't locate it. I added fluid and pushed on. I repeated this a number of times until I finally decided to sleep the night in the car.
Next day I hitched home, borrowed a car and trailer and took the Pajero to the same mechanic.
The box was destroyed. Hard to know what happened first. Filings had clogged the fluid cooler line. No fluid was returning to the sump - it was all blowing out the breather at the top. Filings were in everything. A bush bearing was almost completely gone.
I'm now having a second hand box overhauled as that is far cheaper than repairing the original.
So, it may be a real problem, not a faulty sensor. If the dealer is saying it is ok the keep driving, get them to agree it will be their problem if they are wrong.
Good luck
Bob
Re: 2008 GLX Auto goes into 3rd gear safety mode
The saga continues. Mut III test showed fault codes 1782 and 1783 "Gear shift 4th incomplete""Gear shift 5th incomplete"
After further cleaning of the bit where the solonoids sit, did ot help, the gearbox has now been removed and set to some specialists in JHB on instruction by Mitsuishi Motors SA.
I have in the meantime given up and accepted a trade in offer on a 2009 GLX.
Thanks for all the advice. I will let you know if the fault is finally traced and I am told what it was.
