Universal Joints
Hello everyone.

I drive a 99 Pajero 3.0 V6 GLX SWB.
I serviced my car 3 weeks ago, and they told me I need to replace my U-joint, otherwise i might get into some trouble on my next 4x4 trip. The reason why i didnt let them change it, is because the service was already R6000 (mainly wear and tear) and i didnt have enough money do replace it.
I was told replacing the universal joint is quite an easy job. I have never done this before.
Im not a good mechanic and my knowledge about this isnt very good.
What i want to know is, how many universal joints does my car have? Is it at the back on the prop shaft or in front on the drive shaft or both?
And does anyone know of someone in the Somerset West / Strand area where i can buy it?
Hope someone can help me with some good advice.
Thank you very much.

Re: Universal Joints
Bush,

Have a look under the car, the u-joints should be clearly visible on the propshaft. That way you can tell how many there are. I have a Heyenes manual at home and will take a peek this evening to see what info I can trip over.

Does your car have a vibration or is there a noise when you change gears to make them think the u-joint is on its way out?

You can give the propshaft a good old tuck and a twist to see if there is any play on the u-joint. If it has a grease nipple, give it some grease as well.

Replacing isn't a big job, but you need the right tools and a bit of experience to do it right. Remember to mark the flanges before removal, so you can fit the propshaft back in the same position.

Heynes says you remove the propshaft and then you push the u-joint bearings out. Very important to mark all parts and bits that you separate so that they can be re-fitted in the same way. If not you can end up with a vibration.

Re: Universal Joints
Roelf,

Thank you very much for your help. I took the car to Helderberg Propshaft. The guy there said there is nothing wrong with my universal joint, no play what so ever.
Just when i thought i found a trustworthy mechanic, this happens.

Thanks anyway.
