Not sure if this is drivetrain or steering problem.

I have a gen3 d-id auto. Driving at 70-80km/h I have a loud humming coming from the left front wheel. Going around a left turn (even only a little left 15deg or so) the humming goes away. Turn steering straight again and humming returns. I had a look at the drivetrain etc, cv boots looks good....not oily or teared. Some sweating oil from the diff case thingy. Other than that I don't know what to look at. Would realy like to go to Moz late Dec but I don't want to take chances.

Does anybody have an idea what this might be and estimate repair cost?

On another topic, there is also oil sweating from between the engin and sump I believe and between the engin and transfer case......I dont use much oil.....none since the service in August and this is my daily drive, but is this expensive to fix? Is it something I need to worry about or is some oil around these joints common?

The humming could be your front wheel bearings, they are in a sealed hub. My rear hubs did the same and I had to replace them. I got mine from Masterparts in cape town, R750 each versus approx R2000 each at stealers.

What colour is the oil, is it redish?? Then it might be your ATF fluid and your input shaft seal might be buggered.

Oil is black so I think it is engin oil not transmission.

Leaking oil from a pajero is not common, but I had problems when I bought my paj a year ago due to it standing for a long time. I chased the leaks from cam seals, crank seals, sump gasket, oil pump seals, rear crank seal, and I did my autobox input seal while the box was out. No problems since then.

Ok, I think wheel bearing.

What else could it be right?

How difficult is it to replace the wheel bearing assembly? Could this be done or do you need more that spanners,sockets and little knowledge?
Is it wise to replace only the faulty one or should you replace both the front at the same time? They are expensive (Approx R2800 from stealers).
I do not want to go pirate here, if this thing fails it could be extremely dangerous.

Please advice, this will make or break our possible Dec trip.

I dont think timkin can be classed as a "pirate part" they make plenty of OEM hubs and brearings for all the big vehicle manufacturers, often they have one assembly line that is just split in they packaging dept with the OEM branding and Timkin branding. They make very good bearings.

I bought from Masterparts for about R750 a side, I would definiately do both sides at the same time.

All you need is a bit of patience, and a good socket set and you should be able to do a side in 2-3 hours if you are a bit ham-fisted, quicker if you have a bit of experiance.

No the remaining question, do I replace both or is it ok to do just the one?

Is it possible that both front wheel bearings can go on the same time? 190000km. Freaking R7070 to fix at stealers.

Yes, it is. They both run identical kilometers, why would only one go?? Try Masterparts for timkin hubs and have an indy fit them. Lot cheaper IMHO.
