Strong Side Wall??
Hi All

I'm looking for an A/T tyre with a strong side wall. I currently have Michelin LTX M/S tyres on my Pajero. I have just lost a good tyre due to the soft side wall.

Any suggestions for another A/T tyre with better side walls that is not more expensive than the Michelins; preferably cheaper. (R3100 per tyre). I am looking for good mileage per tyre. Any thoughts would be welcome!!

And what do you think of Goodyear Wrangler RT/S?

Re: Strong Side Wall??
Hi,

I am a new member of this club.

My favourite tyre is a BF Goodrich All Terrain. 80 000km at least on a set with very good on and off road performance. It has a 3 ply sidewall that can take sharp rocks and potholes with ease.....and they are not noisy on tar at high speeds.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Joof

Do mean the wrangler AT/SA? That's going to be my next tyre...

BFs probably have the strongest sidewalls out there, but there is too much sacrifice of wet handling and sand driving ability. (plus I can't afford them ;-)).

But then again, buying tyres seems to be a very personal thing!

Strong Side Wall??
My 2cents

Goodyear AT/SA has not performed for me, I'm afraid....
40 k on my set , on a Sport, in 8 months.

They developed a 'dish' effect on the centre bead after about 20 k.
The centre bead just wears faster than the rest of the tyre.
Rotate at every 10 -15 k etc etc
Normally run my tyres a bit lower, 2,3 or 2.1 if I'm really doing lots of bad gravel that week.
So it's not over inflation.

Dealer , as usual , just shrugs shoulders.
Set them at 2.5
Two days later.... Driving normal gravel road , felt worse than usual, discovered left rear completely deflated. Stone punched a hole right through the centre of the tread. Seems the gaps between the blocks are just too far apart. Also the tread seems very brittle now..? Best way to describe it.

I'm so gatvol of paying R8000 -9000 a time to find if a tyre works....only to be disappointed.
Also spending time, running around to dealers. It's just not worth it. Would rather be somewhere else!
So, I got a price on Goodyear HP - R1350 each . So did two now, other two later this month.
I have zero expectations for this tyre, so I will not be disappointed.

To confirm the AT/SA issue, just take a look around in a car park.....
You will be stunned by how many of these tyres are doing this.
Re: Strong Side Wall??
That is concerning... Looks like I'll have to keep on reading the tyre threads

I shopped around I guess it all comes down to how much you have to spend plus what fits the vehicle, I discarded my 18" rims and got 17" the normal 265/65/17 did not give me many options for a proper 10 ply tyre with a 3 ply sidewall. Most AT Tyres are only like a 70/30 ratio road/offroad so I went for a 50/50, the Cooper ST Maxx 265/70/17 nice aggressive look and capability as well as reasonably quiet at speed due to the y pattern of the tyre, the tyre place reckoned 70 000 kms well we are yet to see only done 3000 so far but really happy. Must also added that I had a bullbar fitted so no drama fitting the bigger size, might be too tight with normal bumper.
