Sometimes my 3.2Did Manual jumps out of first gear when releasing the clutch. This happens very intermitted and I cannot determine a trend as to when it happens. It can happen between 1000km and 20km intervals. Any advise as to the cause?
Mine also started doing it this holiday. Slipped out of first gear when taking off twice on the trip. I thought I might not have placed in gear fully, but this is the first time that it has happened to me. Mine is standing on 205 000km still on original clutch and often towing heavy Xplorer caravan on rough roads so it might be the first signs of the clutch on its way out. Hopefully not, as the clutch and flywheel cost an awfull amount of moola. I hoped to stretch it to 250k before replacing it as preventative maintenance.

My 2001 DiD SWB Manual is doing the same 240000Kms. The only trend I could pick up is that you need to make sure that 1st is properly engaged on takeoff , and then it might also do this when you have no acceleration or deceleration while driving slowly in 1st. (Keeping slight pressure on the gearlever stop this from happening).
Have anybody had and answer to this yet?

What is the mileage on your vehicles clutches? Mine has not done this earlier in its life so I assume it is linked to the clutch, which has done its fair share of work in the last 205 000km? Now if one of you have a new clutch fitted it would mean that this is possibly a gearbox issue and not linked to the clutch. By the way mine has done it 4 times now in the last 3 months and never before.

I'm still on my original Clutch 240000km. It does feel more like first gear is not properly engaged / held in gear if there is no load, rather than clutch related. Still no answer though. Digging on some of the other websites haven't givent me and answer either.

2001 Pajero 3.2 DID SWB
Ok
So, my Pajero again did this trick in short succession recently. I have norrowed it down to the folowing circumstances:
1.Gearbox must be cold, once warm it will not happen. With the winter time now truly on us this obviously added to my recent occurances.
2.It only happens in first gear and only on pull away.
3. It only happens during the first or second use of first gear after start up. If it did not happen by then, it won't happen.
I have decided to bite the bullet and have the box opened to sort it out. Initial prognoses from the gearbox and Diff specialist here in Centurion is that I hopefully caught it in time to prevent damage to the gears. He reckons it is possibly the retaining rings(hope I have this right?) and possibly the fork. From the 4
Pajero manual gearboxes lying on the ground when I was there he seem to know these boxes well!!!
I have made a booking for the near future and will keep you updated. I am also planning on having the clutch replaced at the same time as it has seen better days, but still working.

My gearbox mountings was replaced about 50 000km ago when it was found to be shot, but when the gearbox guy drove my vehicle this morning he also said that it feels as if a mounting might be gone.4ePajero wrote:The first thing to check when a gearbox jumps out of gear is not the gearbox, but the mountings (both engine and transmission assy.)
He showed me the retaining rings and forks that he took out of the other Pajero boxes there and all showed the same sign of wear. He said that it is a pitty that the rings are not made stronger as this is the box weak point with the rest as solid as they come. It seems that if you have a manual Gen 3 Pajero with a gearbox around the 200 000-250 000km mark that you have a very good chance of getting this issue.

Gearbox guys said that he can only quote once opened but if it is what he thinks it is that the cost will be around R3500(Which to me sound reasonable). Hopefully we caught it in time to prevent damage to the gears as well, otherwise cost will be substatially more. He reckons the Pajero box is one of the most expensive to repair gears on in South Africa.

Nope, only manuals. I will ask him about the auto boxes when I go there again. Maybe it was just coincidence.RoelfleRoux wrote:Cats,
Were there any auto boxes lying around his shop floor?
