Just DI-D it
2 loud bangs, no gears, heart failure, everything seems fine
Decided to test the new truck's climbing abilitys this past weekend on a lekke steep hill on the in law's farm.
Put the car in neutral, and shifted to 4LLC.
When I started the steep incline I heard 2 loud bangig noises coming from the gear/transfer box and hit the brakes immediately. Tried to pull away again, but the engine just revved up while in Drive. At this point I started throwing up in my mouth a little bit as I just bought this car privately, and could see the money (I dont have) flying out of my pockets for an eye watering expensive repair bill.
Hit Neutral again and slowly freewheeled backwards to the start again.
Started the whole process over again, and up she went with no problems.
I'm still a bit shaken though and want to know if could have caused any damage. Should I have it checked out, and what could have been the cause.
The guy I bought it from said he very seldomly used it in 4x4.

Just DiD.....

1)Are you sure all the little wheel lights on the dash were solid before taking off?

2)If the car wasn't used much in 4x4, then it is likely that the actuating mechanism needs a bit of work. I recommend that you switch the 4x4 system through all its options on a very regular basis, just to free up the mechanisms.

3)If you are unsure about the quality of the oil in the transmissions, it could be wise to have it all replaced with proper Mitsu products from the dealer.
Re: 2 loud bangs, no gears, heart failure, everything seems
DiD,

This sounds familiar. When i bought my Gen4 second hand with 80k km on the clock, was told the same thing. Hardly ever used in 4x4 etc... When i tried to engage 4x4 the first time, i thought it was a simple case of push the selector to 4LLc and that was it. I put foot and heard some horrendous thuds and bangs and no motion. :o :o :o no what?! ... i noticed the dash lights were still flashing, and then stopped with all the rights lights burning bright. I tried to move again and all was fine.

Turns out the mechanism just needed some time to get it's self together. Anyway, i took it for a complete oil change including diffs, gearboxes etc. Perfect... though sometimes if i've not used it for a while it takes time to engage everything. Not more than 5 or 6 seconds...

Take it for a 'All fluids service' ...

Happy Miles mate!
