Re: Gearbox in Limp/Protection mode
Hello

Mine started doign the same thing a few days ago.

First lost reverse. ECU reset by dealer then all was well.
Drove another week and half, but occaisonally wnet into limp mode at 120km and most of the time on downhills when gearing down. I suspected the trailer pulling the car back when it braked iitself. Uphills didn't occur

On way hom last week I found that sometimes the D took a whiel to engange, like you said above, rev until 1500 or so then it jumped away and all was well

Drove via Cradock on the N9 towards Colesberg and 15km from there the At/Temp light came on....Pulled over car off. The read the manual car on and idles for about 15 min.
Light went off and drove on another 4 km, light back on. Same story idled for a while and it went off. Pulled off and the car shuddered struggled to idle , short jumps forward and I turned off the engine. Called Marius for some advice

Called a tow truck and got driven to Bloemfontein on the back of a lowbed and trailer attached. 4 hours later arrived in Bloem at Mitsubishi at 18:30. Took car in for diagnosis the next day

We stayed over and they did soem tests in the morning. MUT and also levels and oil quality was checked.
Oil good but MUT noted 4 errors related to slipping etc.

Next step to open the box but their technician is goign on leave for 2 weeks.

Called Freek form Mitspro, said he will tow us home and take her in and this was doen on Saturday.

Awaitign the news from Mitspro on the state of what is wrong. :( not very happy guy as it doesnt sound good, the prognosis by Mitsu. Will await Mitspro's prognosis before I start to cry.

Anyway she is in good hands.

182000 km and dont undertsand it.
I bought car on 150000 km, maybe the previous owner towed some beeeg caravans. We have been driving for 1 1/2 years and the only problems have been the selection of D on cold mornings. that is it.

Thanks

Re: Gearbox in Limp/Protection mode
Got my Pajero back from Sparklight Gearboxes. After the second hand box did not function correctly I opted for a very costly rebuild. After installing they damaged the "new" valvebody at the workshop - then fitted another one - which did not "talk" to my car's computer. Went out and bought a genuine one from Mitsu. Everything is now working perfect - except for my bank balance which took a knock of R30k. After seeing how they struggled I am glad I did not opt to try and fix this one myself any further!

Good luck to all the other guys with gearbox problems. At 245000km the Pajero is as new again!

llec999,

R30k isn't a small matter, but if your box is fixed and if you are happy with your Pajero again - then let's just say all that ends well, is well.

Do you have any idea what went wrong in the box, and why? I'm sure we all want to figure out how best to look after our expensive toys - and the box is possibly the most complicated and expensive component in that toy.

Read the full thread for symptoms and what led up to final breakdown. I am unsure if the electrical problem caused the gearbox to go in Limp mode and if driving in limp mode for more than 100km caused the box to overheat (and without the warning lights working due to the blown fuse not sure id the a/t temp light was working).
BUT over and above that I only bought the car at 195k km - and don;t know if the gearbox oil was ever replaced. I did that on 220km BUT the mechanic used the wrong oil - I discovered it after a 1000km (read my thread on diff problem). I then replaced it with DiaQueen (But now unsure if it was properly flushed).

Sparklight said it looked like there was water in the box (YES i did some water crossings). I found the shavings of the clutches - I am still unsure why this happens (heat??? Wear and tear?? Wrong oil? Water??).
I also did a bit of heavy towing on my last 3 trips to Mozambique (1.5ton + 7 people...)

BOTTOMLINE: Autoboxes uses clutches in a similiar way than manual = they won't last forever. Correct oil, no water and protecting it from exesive heat will help them to last, BUT they can;t go on forever)

Maybe we can get more responses.

AND PS My electrical problems is back - got to the car this afternoon - battery drained! I am now searching for some matches and some petrol....  At the end of my rope (and money) ...

EDIT:
Ok Checked out drainage with multimeter - les than 10ma drain when I connect battery - fault is thus not in the electrics of the Pajero = looks like I bought a "dud" battery! Some light at the end of my tunnel.

llec999,

Thanks for taking the time for a very clear and full explanation. We should seriously consider running a thread with the purpose of education us all on the best way to treat and maintain our auto boxes.

I'm really sorry for your continued woes and really hope you get things sorted out!!

Also decided to rather go reconditon route as the second had gearbox might just be as stuffed. The recon box 30k possibly will have a guarentee and should be liek new.

Been quiet that side and have not heard back from this week. We are stuggling as out other car is also at a workshop busy with a dipuste. Will call next week and try get some movement on returning our vehicle.

Re: Gearbox in Limp/Protection mode
It is always difficult decision - if you plan to keep the Pajero I would opt for a rebuild. Sparklight are one of the most expensive shops - BUT they don't cut corners - recon includes Torque Converter Overhaul, new Valve Body and in my case some spider gears as well. And it includes 1 year unlimited mileage warrantee. There are shops in PTA and JHB that offer overhaul for about R18k - worth investigating (being in Mozambique this was not an option - wanted to be close to the shop if there are claims...). Good luck!
