Called Freek form Mitspro, said he will tow us home and take her in and this was doen on Saturday.

Awaitign the news from Mitspro on the state of what is wrong. not very happy guy as it doesnt sound good, the prognosis by Mitsu. Will await Mitspro's prognosis before I start to cry.

Anyway she is in good hands.

AFAIK you can't tow the auto from Bloem to Centurion without damaging the autobox. The lubrication for the box requires the input shaft (i.e. engine) to be running. Or am I wrong?

OK - had to check this and it may be a good reminder for us all.

This is what my owner's manual says:
For auto box make sure that the towing speed and distance are never exceeded: Speed 50km/h Distance 50km.

It further says that for distances greater than 50km ALL wheels must be off the ground - or the rear wheels must be off the ground.

So it would be interesting to know how the vehicle was towed?

It is always difficult decision - if you plan to keep the Pajero I would opt for a rebuild. Sparklight are one of the most expensive shops - BUT they don't cut corners - recon includes Torque Converter Overhaul, new Valve Body and in my case some spider gears as well. And it includes 1 year unlimited mileage warrantee. There are shops in PTA and JHB that offer overhaul for about R18k - worth investigating (being in Mozambique this was not an option - wanted to be close to the shop if there are claims...). Good luck!

I got a quote from spark light R30000 complete rebuild and 2 year 30000km warranty. Don't want take a chance with and old box and not being sure how it was used.

I have been thinking about these autoboxes we have and almost lost a whole nights sleep over it.

Then during the cool dawn hours I had my epiphany:

1)A well maintained and cared for box should easily last 300k kms and cost R30k to recon.
2)A replacement clutch (dual mass) on a manual Pajero DiD goes for about R21k. They can maybe last 200k kms.

Either way is the "running cost" for the two the same per km.

No more sleepless nights for me, but I am more aware of my box and what is good and what is bad for it.

I'm really sorry for the gents that have to fork out R30k - never nice - but I want to thank them for sharing it here to make us all more aware.

All in all I will buy auto again... it is above all so much nicer to drive auto than manual (especially here in traffic)..

Pajero going to its new owner this afternoon, just fitted new battery so all should be fine for another 300k km -
YES it has been sold (before the problems started).

(Project White Pajero will start next week [fixing minor oil leaks and slight diesel knock], hopefully in 2 weeks I will be driving a white DiD!)

I was also discussign the same point with somemanuals (people with manaual cars)

Thanks for putting it like this. At my current km rate per annum we should be good for another 15-20 years. With regular maiantenance maybe more

Picked her up today from Mitspro

Opted for second hand gearbox. My box was not economical to repair, from two independent places.

Drove from Centurion to Roodepoort and all feels very well. Shifts nice and smooth and goes into gear as it should without that little shudder it used to have when changing between the P R N D.

Also did oil service for all diffs/engine/transfer and gearbox oil. diesel filter etc.

Very happy with the work. Will be going back to Mitspro.

I bought the car on 150000km and it had a FSH but no one knows how the gearbox was maintained. I have been driving it for 30000km and this happened to us. The gearbox was doing odd things since I had it for about 6 months especially when it was cold. limp mode and didn't want to go into D until warm

Maybe the when we traveled the Baviaanskoof and over 500km in low range with trailers pushed it over.

The guys reckon it overheated (temp light came on once for the first time ever) melted a plastic bush and the little gears went off axis and got shredded. lots of shavings in the sump and the casing also got scratches.

Well I can just hope the 2nd box I got was looked after and will last way beyond your 340k km.
