Grinding noise
Hi , I really know how to describe this as sound affects on paper does not sound the same as in head. this weekend while returning from long weekend as I slowed down at a robot I heard this grinding sound "GZZZZzzzzzzzzzz" . sounds like gear not properly engaged . i pushed in the clutch and put the gear in neutral ,but the grinding sound continued until I came to a complete stop. As I stopped I heard a "doeff not loud " sound from the gearbox or its vicinity and the grinding sound disappeared . the yellow centre diff light came on . put the car in first gear and it ran fine . this happened a few weeks ago , again after stopping next to road the sound disappeared and it ran fine afterwards.
could it be the sensors on the gearbox.
any ideas? thanks Ono

Make sure the ABS sensors on each wheel are clean and free from mud. If you drive at slow speed and switch the car off (not recommended), you should hear the same sound (scary). Its a grinding noise similar to engaging a gear without depressing the clutch.

Could it be that??

Re: Grinding noise
Sounds like a front side shaft is losing vacuum in the actuator and engaging into the front diff.

Check your rubber vacuum hoses to the 4x4 solenoids and to the front diff, also check your solenoids for good operation.

Your amber CD lock light comes on when the 4x4 ECU senses that something is not engaged/is engaged with the short selection lever in the wrong position. ie if you are in 2H and the 4x4 ECU sensor picks up the front side shaft has engaged (as in your case) the amber CD lock will light up to warn you something is amiss in your vehicles 4x4 section.

4ePikanini did a whole DIY troubleshooting for the flashing 4x4 lights, step by step, search the forum and you will find it.

Re: Grinding noise
I had the same problem. It was the front diff that loses vacuum and then the diff engages, or tries to.. I replaced the vacuum pipes and since then it never happend again.

Re: Grinding noise
thank you guys Willie , Nick and Mechanic12.
I have checked the solenoid as well as the vacuum pipes , looks ok to me . it seems the problem just occurs randomly , it has been behaving itself for the last couple of weeks . I am worried about the sensors on top of the gearbox could they also be part of the problem ?
appreciate your feedback.

Re: Grinding noise
Hi Guys
I have the same problem.
How would one check that the solenoids are actually working or not? Can one just take a wire from the battery direct to the solenoid? if so should the solenoid make a noise or vibrate or something?
I am trying eliminate the solenoids as ive been told it could also be the switches on the transfer case not sending power to the solenoid.
I have inspected the vacum pipes and they all seem fine.

Thanks in advance!

So it seems the problem is solved.
Mitspro could not find anything wrong and advised me to drive it as is and when the grinding noise occurred to bring it straight back without turning the car off.
They plugged their computer in with the car still running and it showed the free wheel solenoid to be faulty. It was obviously an intermittent fault as it didn't show up at all yesterday. I'm replacing the solenoids and hopefully that's the last if it.

Solenoids were definitely the problem.
