A/T and Charging Lights on
Hi All, I have a 1996 Pajero 3.5 litre auto with the following issue. On starting the vehicle both the A/T warning light and the Charging light remain on. As I increase the revs the lights begin to flicker until they go out at around 3500 rpm. They then stay off with normal driving until extended driving at low revs or until restart. I have had the battery and charging system checked and all is ok. The A/T fluid level is fine, but a little overfilled.
The vehicle drives normally without any strange noises etc.
What I find strange is that these lights appear as if they are linked together but apart from this issue they seem to work normally.
Has anyone come across this problem before and can anyone offer any suggestions as to what I could check.

I have found that on the Pajero that the battery light is often linked to other faults registered.

I will check battery connections but maybe start with the obvious- you state that the AT is slightly overfilled. Get it back to normal level and see if this resolves the issue. It might be that the AT fluid is in some way measured with a resistance and with the overfill it gives too much resistance giving off a battery fault until the alternator has spinned enough to get the battery level up after the start and the AT oil has warmed up somewhat to ease flow.

Re: A/T and Charging Lights on
It sounds as though the brushes on your alternator may have oil on them. I don't know the 3,500 motor, but assume that unlike Pajeros with diesel motors, it does not have a vacuum pump connected to the end of the alternator shaft. I recently had a similar problem with my Gen1 and found that the seals between the vacuum pump and the alternators shaft were worn and oil was migrating into the alternator and flooding the brushes.

I suggest that you have a look at the alternator because it is not charging properly and you will soon have a flat battery.

Re: A/T and Charging Lights on
Hi CATS,

Many thanks for your input. I reduced the A/T level to th the correct level and am having the same problem.

I am wondering if there is a pump in the transmission that may be failing or perhaps the filter is blocked. It looks as though I will have to remove the pan and replace the filter and fluid.

Re: A/T and Charging Lights on
Hi Marty,

I have had the charging system checked and it seems to be fine. Surely a problem with the alternator would not cause the A/T warning light to illuminate.
