Top glove box latch failure
The top glove box latch in my Pajero has failed and i cant get the thing open! Any ideas on how to open it without damaging the dash?
I have seen on the Aussie forum that they have drilled a hole in the latch as there is actually a lock under the plastic, does this also apply to vehicles sold in SA?
Re: Top glove box latch failure
I think the SA spec is the same with the lock.

Did it give any warning that it was going to get stuck? I have been reading the posts on the Ausie forum some time now on this issue and wondered if I will ever get this problem as well, as it seems to be rather common over there!

Re: Top glove box latch failure
Ok, problem sorted out! Our spec is the same as Aussie spec, just drilled a small hole in the plastic cover and there is a lock under it. Unlocked it with the key and swopped the top and bottom lock, now have 2 locking cubbyholes
SPAREWHEEL COVER - THE HARD ONE
Hi guys,

I remember reading that sommebody was looking for a hard sparewheel cover. I was at Parts Hunt today and saw one in their "store". Phone Gert on 083 284 7734.

Re: Top glove box latch failure
Bossie74, thanks for posting about this, mine locked itself without warning between Mokotlong & Sani. I have yet to get it open almost two years later. Any chance you could post pics of where you drilled or a link to the Aussie site?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

The latch mechanism on the top glove box is identical to the latch mechanism on the glove box directly below it - just the circular hole that is in the lower mechanism face plate is missing in the upper mechanism face plate. So you can drill an 11.5mm dia hole in the upper latch face plate centred per the circular keyhole in the lower latch face plate. Or you can drill a smaller hole / use a Dremel and work your way up. Once you have a hole big enough you can use your existing glove box key to open the upper glove box.

If you botch the hole a bit then some people have swapped the upper and lower latch mechanism (because the lower one is less in sight).

Re: Top glove box latch failure
Hi,
As Andrew said. I stuffed the hole up because i didnt use the correct size bit so swopped them around, new lock from Mitsubishi is R500 odd. The mechanism can only be opened using the key now.

Guys, thanks very much! I will have a go at it as soon as I get home next month, as I am currently at work in Malaysia.

Thank you for this post guys! I have the exact same problem! I tried everything, but could not get it open without breaking something. Strange situation with the lock hidden!
