So after many years of faithfull service Snoopy has left me standing next to the road due to engine malfunction for the first time!!!!! It was not too far from my home at the end of a short holiday and ended on a flatbed! Not nice.

Symptoms was that I felt a bit of a miss in the engine. At first I thought ir might just be my imagination but it gradually got worse until I stopped and experienced as per a video that I will upload later. It idles fine and then idles "off beat" for a while and then return to normal. Engine temp was fine. EGT was fine. No water loss. No oil loss. No smoke. Just the funny idle which was also felt when dtiving at higher revs as well. I was about 120km from home and decided to push through thinking that it might be dodgy diesel as I just pumped the aux tank to the main tank before it happened. About 70km before home I had to stop at a stop sign and it idled funny and then just died. Never to start again after that although the engine swings freely. I suspected diesel and thought I might as well just bleed the system and prime it again. To my shock I discovered that the water trap plug was disconected! That means that if I did pick up water in the diesel somewhere that I would not have recieved any warning! This also ties up with my aux tank diesel theory as the aux tank is lower than the normal tank and gravity filled but pumped back into main when needed. I drain a lot of diesel out. Not sure if there was water as well and bled and primed the system again but she refused to start again.

So I got a flatbed ride home!

Any ideas on how to start sorting this problem before I take it to the big boys?

What does a stuffed speed sensor on a diesel pump do? What will happen if a diesel filter becomes full of water? What will a stuffed diesel pump do?

That can only be the throttle body, throttle positioning sensor or speed sensor on the pump.

Next time it does that, take the boost pipe off and inspect the throttle body to see if it's starving the engine of air.

Here is the second video of the dip in engine power. This was not only at idling but also at speed and using throttle with the resultant loss in power untill it stalled completely. During this video the throttle wasnt touched. It comes and goes and does not seem constant?

You dont understand. It is now dead and refuse to start after it stalled on my way home. Hence the flatbed. It has refused to start since. It only turns but never start, not even close to starting.

I dont think it is related to throttle position sensor as it did it at any throttle position. I am suspecting a speed sensor on the pump, but will this lead to total engine stall?

I will check for fault codes and maybe also fit new dieselfilter and airfilter as a start.

OK so there is a fault code:
48 GE actuator (in the middle of control sleeve position sensor inoperative)system

This seem to indicate to the diesel pump and specifically the GE actuator (electronic governor) and or control sleeve position sensor. Both these items are on the pump itself. I am unsure if I must fiddle more or leave it to a profesional as the diesel pump has always been black magic to me and have always been avoided. In fact I dont even know exactly where it is [GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]. Most I know is that it is ussualy associated with some serious money when touched! I might search for the conectors as indicated in the manual and test as indicated. But I first need build up some confidence as this is way over my office Johnny depth.

As I decided to keep this car for prosperity earlier this year I made up my mind to remanufacture the diesel pump and replace injectors in 2014 as she is just under 300000km and from internet searches it seemed to indicate that diesel pump might be due for mayor service. But it seems I had my timing out with a few days .

I have heard of that part being replaced in situ. Perhaps a call to Allan Black may reveal some knowledge to start with?

Sorry to hear about this. Hope it gets sorted without major expense.

I am pretty sure I read a recent post where this kind of symptom was related to poor contacts at one of the plugs between diesel pump and loom. OK, found it Gen 3 3.2 DID strange cutting out problem

Maybe start with some contact cleaner.
