Pajero Auto gearbox service-or not??
My 09 3.2 did GLX Auto is due for a 120 000km service. I do tow a Conqueror Conquest trailer and I do travel a fair amount on dirt roads/off-road when I can. The Agents claim that this service (for around R6500) includes changing all fluids and filters inclusive of auto transmission fluid. (not the AT filter). an independent mechanic Stan who has been recommended by pajero owners on at least one forum (cant recall if it was this one?) claims that one should leave the gearbox alone unless it is giving trouble. I phoned a gearbox specialist in Jhb whose name I got off the internet. I was amazed that he gave the identical advice. he claims that when you mess with these gearboxes, even just to change the fluid, they are more likely to start becoming problematic.... just check the fluid levels and for any leaks regularly. so 2 opinions from people who stand to make around R2000 from servicing my gearbox yet very honestly advise me not to do it vs the agents who are ready to replace the AT fluid. I think I am with the independents on this one especially if it saves me half the cost of the 120 000 service, but equally dont want to have to re-build my transmission anytime soon

I am keen for advice and opinion on this from those of you who understand these things much better than I do

Re: Pajero Auto gearbox service-or not??
I would guess changing transmission oil is only as intrusive as changing the engine oil ?

I bought my gen 3 secondhand and had it changed at the last service and could definitely feel a difference afterwards.

Re: Pajero Auto gearbox service-or not??
AFAIK the manufacturer's service schedule calls for the ATF to be checked every service and changed every 60 000km. I would stick with that - especially as you are towing. Always use the Mutsubishi ATF - used to be Dia Queen but I believe it may have been rebranded recently.

[edit]And when changing it it is good practice to perform a flush to ensure that all the oil gets changed and not just waht drops out the ATF sump plug. There is a write up by 4epikanini elsewhere on this forum. You can do it at home.

Agree with Andrew,

But I can promise you that most of the time the mehanic wil just drain it at the trans sump and will not flush the sistem, unless you ask them to do it and then I would also like to see if it is been done properly.

Re: Pajero Auto gearbox service-or not??
thanks guys, all makes sense to me. the issue may be with the flushing. intuitively it makes sense to want to flush and change oil that operates at such extremes for 60 000Km
Re: Pajero Auto gearbox service-or not??
Arnie, Change ALL the fluid as per 4e's procedure. I decided to do it (the car has been serviced by the agents till the end of the maintenance plan). I bought 10 lit fluid and proceeded as per 4e's instructions. When I removed the cooler pipe and the fluid started to run out, it was like a mud stream the same for the sump oil. I then put in new oil and ran the engine (plus playing with the gears) for about 10 minutes.
Hereafter I repeated 4e's procedure. The oil out of the cooler and sump was a lot cleaner but I decided to repeat the procedure again. Approx 20 litres later the oil was a lot cleaner but in the interest of getting it really clean, I shall change it again when we return from our holiday (going to Tsitsikama, Sedgefield, Mossel Bay and back via Oudtshoorn, Gamtoos Valley, Mokale National Park to Pretoria. When back, I shall change the oil again plus replace the filter. The oil and box should then be clean.

Re: Pajero Auto gearbox service-or not??
Peter, normally I would agree, but when it comes to changing oil... I think its way to late to wait untill its broken

Re: Pajero Auto gearbox service-or not??
Thanks all for some useful points. I think that I have taken from this, that if I change the oil then it needs a thorough flush and change rather than the simple drainage and change that the agents are suggesting
