I have also found that there are 2 different lifters.

1 Has a small hole with about a 1mm hole diameter whereas the revised version has a bigger hole of about 3mm diameter. These bigger hole lifters paired with Caltex delo 400 oil makes them virtually 100% silent

Hi Marius. This "lifter tick fix", is it possible to elaberate more to their purpose. A guy like me, with no knowlege of motor vehicles and it's operation, can get confuse - it seems to me you talk about "tappets" ?

yes. it's hydraulic tappets and they sometimes don't adjust properly and then make the tick tick tick like valve clearances not set properly.

This procedure on top tries to get rid of the "stickiness" in the lifters to get them silent again. IMHO the only real way is to use good oil and replace the old style lifters with the newer style "big hole" lifters.

Mine only started after the top was done, what a irretating and annoying sound. What do you suggest on the short term to "soften" the sound, or is the only way to go to take the tappets out, clean or replace with the 3mm hole ones. Any other suggestions?????

I don't know if it is a mitsu approved oil but I have had great results ( and the rest of my family ) with caltex delo 400. It is mainly a diesel engine oil but can be used for petrol engines as well. detergents are good.

Use at own risk but as mentioned I have had great success for myself and the family.

My jetta lifters are quiet
My pajero lifters are quiet
My grandfather's ford v6 lifters are quiet
no oil related problems in my brothers vw 1.9 tdi & pajero 2.8 td
no oil related problem's in dad's 3.2 DiD

I don't know if it is a mitsu approved oil for that engine so use at own risk.

Now you are pushing it

There is an easier way to get the lifters quiet, overfill the engine with 500ml and see how quiet it goes. My theory is that there is too much oil in the motor under acceleration and nor enough in the sump to stop the pick up lifting air bubbles and by overfilling it you create a buffer.

I run castrol edge in my pajero and have noticed if the lifters start rattling that I need to top up with the extra pint. Besides having quiet lifters my fuel consumption has dropped and the engine runs cooler and smoother, so the merrits of a good oil goes a lot further than one might think.

Robert if you upgrade to a premium oil it might be a good thing to change your oil sooner after the change over as the better oil has a higher detergent quality and can loosen sludge and other gunk in the engine that can block the filter. This only needs to be done on the first change

After flushing my engine, I took both Marius' and Henk's advice, and replaced my Helix oil with Delo 400, and over-filled by 500 ml.

It worked. The lifters are finally quiet!.

I've heared them once in the past week, and only for a split second!

HI All

I have also taken 4E's advice in Dec 2010 before I went to CT. Did an oil change and motor is very much quieter. This could be noticed striaght after the change. After 3000km round trip, clocked over 200 000km, motor is running much smoother.

Was a battle to find 5l cans, but managed at R110 per 5 litlres. Happy with oil sofar.
