Forgive my ignorance but i am a relatively new Pajero owner. when I am in low range and engage the rear difflock, I note that the indicator light on the dash flashes and continues to flash until I disengage. is this what it is supposed to do (perhaps to remind me to disengage after use) or does this suggest that the difflock is not actually engaging as would be the case in other 4x4's I have owned??

Not engaged. Try driving slowly forward for a while in a straight line. It should become solid light once engaged.

Hi Arnie,
From your last post it almost sounds like you are trying to engage the rear diff lock (RDL) on the fly.
You first have to ensure that you are in 4LLc or 4HLc before you can engage the rear diff lock. i.e. the CENTRE diff lock light must be on and NOT be flashing. To do that you need to stop and move the gear lever into Neutral before moving the 4WD selector to one of those two positions.
Even when in 4LLc or 4HLc the manual recommends against engaging the rear diff lock while the wheels are turning (see the CAUTION on p5-25).
You would generally not drive continuously with the rear diff locked.
For instance you are in 4LLc or 4HLc and get cross-axled. Stop, engage RDL, get over the obstacle, disengage RDL.
or arrive at river / mud crossing, evaluate, decide to cross, engage RDL, cross river / mud patch, disengage RDL.
If you are unsure I suggest that you go play somewhere or do a course. Remember to ONLY engage 4LLc or 4HLc or RDL on a surface where the wheels can slip (gravel / sand / mud, never on tar or paved surface.
