275/70/16 Tyres ?
hi Guys,
Ive been given two brand new tyres. The size is 275/70/16 I want to fit them on the rear but wonder if it will be Ok as im running 265/70/16 on the front and have a 265/70/16 spare. What, if any, are the consequences of using odd size tyres like this and what will happen if I get a puncture and have to fit the spare on the same axle as the 275/70/16. as always any advice appriciated.

AFAIK your ECUs will be very unhappy.

All your safety systems like ABS and ASC / and your traction control system want to see wheels turning at the same speed. That will not be the case with varying circumferences as a result of differing tyre sizes.

Don't do it!

Can it damage anything mechanically ?

Using the centre difflock 4HLc or 4LLc can cause damage to the transmission and possibly drive shafts and U-joints when running on a hard surface. This is because the difflock will force front and rear wheels to rotate at the same speed whilst the tyre circumference differences cause the wheels to rotate at different speeds. Somewhere something has to give!

The new tyre will raise your vehicle by about 7mm or a 1.8% difference in diameter. The Max recommended difference is 2.5%.
The effect is the same as fitting brand new tyres at the back with worn out tyres in the front. (10mm to 2mm) So not much difference in day to day driving. However, Bigwill is right in that as soon as you lock up, the difference between the tyres rolling distance (about 44mm) has to go somewhere. Scrubbing of the tyres and winding up the drive train is the result, leading to excessive strain and wear on both.
